WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A follow-up to a story you saw FIRST ON 3 last night. The billboard that some people are calling Godless is up in our area. The billboard that says "One Nation Indivisible" will be in Wilmington for at least four weeks.
The North Carolina Secular Association and a number of other statewide groups are behind the push to get the words "under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance.
One business owner's store is right below the billboard. He says the billboard was done tastefully.
"It doesn't appear to me to be any big deal at all," Mike Connelly said. "Ninety percent of the people that go by probably won't even notice it, or even more. Hopefully, we won't have any negative reaction from anybody in the area that would do something radical or stupid. It should be fine."
The billboard will also appear in Asheville, Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh and Winston-Salem.

God
There are way more people in the world that believe in GOD than there are that do not believe him him. So why are we trying so hard to please this small amount of people?
B/c there are some people in
B/c there are some people in this country who believe that THEIR God is the ONLY God. That their God does not include muslims or jews or hindus or buddhists. I have no problem with the way the pledge is but we need to clarify that when we say "God" that we mean it in a general way. Not just the Christian god. Without that clarification, then appears that we are living in a Christian theocracy and I don't think that is the image that we want for our country.
Just had to make the
Just had to make the observation that the angry, hate-filled, love-it-or-leave-it comments seem to be coming from those whose claim that they follow the commandments of a loving god. Didn't Jesus say something about going into your room, shutting the door, and praying there? It's the hypocritical stance of so-called religious people that turned me off to religion in the first place. God loves you beyond measure, but is ready to punish you for eternity for not being perfect? Accept (insert name of your personal lord and savior) or burn? Is this the 16th century?
If you blame the atheists and agnostics for the decline of civilization, violence, immorality, blah blah blah, tell me please just exactly who has been running this country all this time? Christians!
God
It seems you don't understand Christianity. No, God does not punish people because they are not perfect. In fact, being a Christian does not mean that you do not sin. What it means that your sins will be forgiven if you sincerely repent and change your ways by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Otherwise, yes, you will receive your due on judgment day.
Atheists have nothing to look forward to beyond this life. But it is not too late for you to decide to change that.
"So called Christians" have
"So called Christians" have been running this country and now they are trying to take God out of everything. Look what it's done; nothing good. A life without God is not a life at all.
"" GOD BLESS US EVERYONE"!
"" GOD BLESS US EVERYONE"!
History
Reading over the comments, one fact becomes painfully clear: Many, if not most of you are as un-informed about US History as you obviously are about the genesis and history of your own religions. According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, http://christianity.about.com/od/denominations/p/christiantoday.htm there are about 38,000 distinct sects and denominations of Christianity! Without even bothering to ask why this is true, I wish to point out that the disagreements among the sects, some effecting basic dogma, was one of the primary reasons why the delegates to the Constitutional Convention created a totally secular government.
Prior to the revolution, it was as illegal to be a member of the Church of England in Connecticut as it was to be a Congregationalist in Virginia. The patchwork of religious laws in force in the colonies left the founders with no option other then allow no establishments at all. That's why we allow no religious tests for office, allow an elected official to swear OR AFFIRM an oath of office, and forbid the government to establish a particular religion, which has been interpreted by the courts to mean any religion.
It took me over 6,000 words to develop this thought fully: http://pwsoderman.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/christian-nation-you-say.p...
We are not trying to "change the Constitution," as some have suggested, but are merely suggesting that the pledge return to the form in which it was when it was first instituted, before the knee-jerking in the 50's. Those of you who are suggesting that we are somehow Communists, or worse, are merely ignorant of the facts.
Those who suggest that without some god or other there is "no basis for morality," are merely parroting the dogma you hear at your place of worship on a regular basis. I might suggest you ponder this question: Is something "good" because god says it is, or does god say it is BECAUSE it's good?
This is not a new question, it was posed by Plato, and to date, not Christian (or other religious) apologist has ever satisfactorily answered it. You see, if something is "good" because god says it is, then it's totally arbitrary, as god could say murder was good, for instance, or rape. If god says something is "good" because it is, then there is a moral authority outside of god. Fortunately for the human race, the second statement is the one that is true, for following the first statement, you get witch trials, dark ages, crusades, and airplane flying into buildings.
Just think a bit!
Mr. Soderman
I agree wholeheartedly with your comment. However I believe it to be quite over the heads of most of the bible thumpers that frequent this comment board and demean those who disagree with their ideological views. I find it to be quite eloquent and well thought out, but to make your point more palatable to the readers here whom may disagree with your stance, you may want to add an "Aint" every other sentence, or perhaps reference NASCAR in some sense, or even attach an mp3 with some banjo music. I welcome healthy debate, but very rarely do you get that on these boards. It's refreshing to see someone who uses intelligence to form an argument. I will be eagerly awaiting a rebuttal to your comment, it should be...........interesting?
to the people insistant on revising history
Just to be clear. There is History the way you think it should have been and choose to remember it. And then there is the Actual recorded history of America, the way it actually was.
The pledge of allegiance was written in 1892. "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
in 1923 it was changed from "my flag" to "the Flag of the United States"
in 1942 they added "of America"
and finally in 1954 the words "under God" where added
we survived as a nation for 178 years without the words "under God" in our pledge.
Think before you post. Research what you think.
The Founding Fathers were Deists
Most of the Founding Fathers were all Deists (not Christians). Ben Franklin and Thomas Paine were too prominent deists, and the SECULAR, NON-CHRISTIAN (mostly deist) presidents we've had are even more interesting: Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, J.Q.Adams, Jackson, and Lincoln.
Washington famously attended church once in NYC, after he became president, and at the communion part, he walked out. The priest told him later to set a good example, and Washington replied that he would not bother his church anymore. Although Washington was a very quiet man who kept his beliefs mostly to himself, the historical record, including letters by various inquiring religious officials, confirm that he was a deist.
Paine, Adams, and Jefferson, were adamant in their disdain for organized religion, evidenced clearly from their writings. Jefferson could not stand the word "God" in the Declaration, so he used the word "Creator" instead.
Here is an original document, from the Treaty of Tripoli which President George Washington negotiated and President John Adams signed:
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen,—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
The Founding Fathers understood that the SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE was necessary to keep politics civil and religion free. The moment religion steps into politics, unnecessary strife ensues. The moment politics steps into religion, unnecessary strife ensues. The church has no more business in the state house than the state house has any business in the church! You should exercise your religion freely, but make NO ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION in your government!
Not Christians?
I happen to believe most of the founders of our country were indeed Christians. Here are but two quotes.
Benjamin Franklin
SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION; DIPLOMAT; PRINTER; SCIENTIST; SIGNER OF THE CONSTITUTION; GOVERNOR OF PENNSYLVANIA
As to Jesus of Nazareth, my opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the system of morals and His religion as He left them to us, the best the world ever saw or is likely to see.
Thomas Jefferson
SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE; DIPLOMAT; GOVERNOR OF VIRGINIA; SECRETARY OF STATE; THIRD PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
The doctrines of Jesus are simple, and tend all to the happiness of man.
The practice of morality being necessary for the well being of society, He [God] has taken care to impress its precepts so indelibly on our hearts that they shall not be effaced by the subtleties of our brain. We all agree in the obligation of the moral principles of Jesus and nowhere will they be found delivered in greater purity than in His discourses
I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished anyone to be: sincerely attached to His doctrines in preference to all others.
I am a real Christian – that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ.

Legion
Have you seen the movie Legion? Good stuff!
Secular represent. Greydon Square represent. Jefferson was right.
Billboard
First of all I hate billboards. They're an eye sore and trashy looking.
Second, I am agnostic....can't really figure out what to believe, but I am opposed to changing our pledge of allegiance. It's drilled in my brain from years of saying it every single morning in school that it will ALWAYS be 'one nation, under God, indivisible'!!! Can't people find something better to do with thier time?? JEEZ
Under God
WATCH: Marine Stuns Crowd at Tea Party | The FOX Nation
WHY???
Our founding fathers based everything they did under God they did not try to force anyone to believe in God why would you try to force someone to Not believe in God? it's wrong it's immoral it's a disgrace to this country if you don't want to believe in God thats your problem but don't go trying to change something that has been in place for many many years. thats like trying to change the constitution just to fit your selfish needs Why is it so horrbible to have God in our schools and in our pledge? it's never been a problem before, as a matter of fact since you started taking God out of our schools they have become a horrible enviroment for the children who are actually there to learn and make something out of themselves you have gangs in schools fights everyday people bringing guns and knives and drugs to school our country was founded by immigrants most chose to be here in one nation under God if you don't like it find somewhere else to live
To Amanda Stepka who asked "why."
I'll tell you why. Let's start with question marks: one question mark does its job; multiple question marks do not make the thing more demanding to answer. Caps, periods, or other punctuation are necessary for readers to follow your ideas. You are trying to get your ideas across and believed in, aren't you? Be sure that you don't just throw commas all over the place. Other wisse your thoughts are just so much blah, blah, blah.
My favorite part of Stephen KIng's The Dead Zone is where the narrator explains that he can always tell when a religion nutbag is writing to him. It's because their emotions take over to the point that mispellings, poor punctuation (or no punctuation) and bad grammar get in the way of the message.
So, Amanda, no one is getting your messae.
Your comment/reply to Amanda
Your comment/reply to Amanda has nothing to do with this topic. If you are going to grade messages here, you need to grade your own "messae". "It's because their emotions take over to the point that mispellings, poor punctuation (or no punctuation) and bad grammar get in the way of the message." Blah, blah blah.... Amanda made some great points and you focused on her grammar.... What a joke. The whole poin of this topic is about taking GOD out of the Pledge of Allegiance. There are way more people in the world that believe in GOD than there are that do not believe him him. So why are we trying so hard to please this small amount of people?
I just read what Amanda
I just read what Amanda wrote and I understood her completely. You may not of gotten her "message" not messae.... But she makes some really good points, God should not be taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance. There are more people in the world that believe in God than there are that do not believe in him. So why are we trying so hard to please this small amount of people?
To Guest of the Queen
Look I'm not a "religious nutbag", I was simply just trying to say that somethinmg that has been in place for so long has no right to be changed. I don't go to church, I don't try to force God upon anyone, although I do believe in God. As for my punctuation marks who cares my point was proven, It's not like we are in English class. You only want to criticize my grammar but not the words that were written, I'm pretty sure my "messae" as you put it was understood.
I had no problem..
understanding her message. You just had nothing real to add so you went another way eh? Re-read yours know-it-all.....
you are taking the focus off
you are taking the focus off of the topic at hand. stay focused and dont let the devil get in your way
Under God
Sorry Mike Connelly, but there is no way to "tastefully" remove God from our society. People and comments like yours are what is wrong with the country and perpetuate the secularization of our society. If you think morality and family values are improving in our country and the world is a better place, think again. Don’t be fooled by this subtle attempt to change the way our children are raised and educated.
Stand up against this communist group. Let your patrons know that you don’t support their agenda. Put some effort into something in your life and don’t be afraid of what some idiot might think.
Amen!
Amen!
GODLESS indeed!!!
These "secular" heathens would have you believe that they intentions are just. When the intention here is to destroy this country and bring it to its knees. Secular-the state of being separate from religion!!! We are guaranteed freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. Now while I agree that organized religions can have their "extremists," the majority of people are moral and just. However, to remove GOD from this country is to allow ill-willed, evil people to do as they please. It is religion that keeps everyone on the path of justice and the pursuit of happiness. These people will destroy this country if allowed. It is up to every God fearing christian to stand and fight to keep this country alive and well. The United States was founded on strong Christain morals and beliefs, by strong Christians. We are on the verge of allowing GODLESS people to tear at the very foundation of our country, our livelyhood and the very depth of our being. If we sit back and do nothing to stop this purely evil gesture, then we are at fault for its disastrous result!!!!
This country was founded by
This country was founded by people who did not want a state appointed religion like England had. Many were escaping religious persecution. Organized religion has led to so many deaths over the centuries. Why can't people see that? Is education in this country so poor that no one learns in history classes how religion was used to steal property from others? How people were burned to death or pressed to death under big rocks because someone accused them of not being "god fearing"? I take it you people think the Salem witch trials and the like are perfectly OK. SO if someone chooses not to believe in "God" they should die? If that is what you people believe then you are no better than Islamic terrorists. By the way, freedom of religion is also freedom FROM religion if that is what the idivivual so chooses. You don't like it then move to a country with a state sponsered religion and see if you like that any better. I will never understand why "chritians" feel the need to shove their veiws down everybody's throats. That's not very "Christ-like".
Another Billboard from Hell
There's one thing for sure:
The NC Secular Association has little imagination when it comes to getting their point across.
They had to rely on a trashy billboard. Ugh!
Why couldn't they have taken out an ad in the paper or on TV or Internet, etc?
Pledge
You cant change the pledge of allegiance.....hahahahaha.....it will always remain the same.
A Picayune Point on a huge, Ugly Billboard!
Shame on the NC Secular Association for renting spaces on billboards (the worst visual polluters along our streets and highways) to make their picayune point.
Are there any organizations who are willing to demand that billboards (litter on sticks) be banned from our highways?
No, probably not. It seems that few care about the degradation of our urban and rural environments by humongous, frightfully-ugly billboards.
I say,"Tear them down now!"
Say it enough times and
Say it enough times and people will begin to believe it.
But whether we're indivisible or divided, decieved or walking in truth, we will always be under God.
US VETERAN
When I was in school, when I took the oath to defend this great land, and when I pay my bills and taxes "under GOD" was and still is involved in the process one way or another. When our Washington represenitives, in either house, start their day it is lead in prayer. If we can no longer pray to our father, in our white house, congress, schools, homes, then we are already lost. God help us all....
