NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- It was a busy day Friday at the New Hanover County Board of Elections. The filing deadline was Friday at noon, and 10 new candidates signed up to run for elected office.
The headline today is former Wilmington Mayor Harper Peterson, filing to run for the office again.
Peterson served as mayor from 2001 to 2003 and lost two reelection bids against Spence Broadhurst. This time Peterson will face incumbent Mayor Bill Saffo and Jusin Lanasa, the owner of a local tattoo parlor.
Twelve candidates entered the race for the three Wilmington City Council positions.
Friday also marked the deadline for filing to run for office in Carolina, Kure and Wrightsville Beach.
Wrightsville Beach native Billy Ulmer is one of eight competing for two Alderman spots.
Ulmer said, "We've become very popular throughout the country as a destination and we need to make these people coming in feel very welcome and a part of the community, and at the same time, watching our growth and allowing for the density that's starting to creep up on us in Wrightsville Beach."
Wilmington residents will vote on October 9, while voters in Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach will have elections on November 6.
A few of the local mayoral candidates are running unopposed.
