A weekend trip to the beach turned deadly for a child visiting our area with relatives. It happened at Fort Fisher a little before 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said 10-year-old Master Emanuel Carter of Sanford went swimming with his parents and brother when they were caught in a rip current. Lifeguards rescued three of the swimmers but could not save the boy.

The Coast Guard later found the child during a search. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
