Prosecutors will seek death penalty for Atwater

Federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a man charged with killing UNC Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson.

Attorney General Michael Mukasey has approved prosecutors' request to seek the execution of 22-year-old Demario Atwater. Atwater pleaded not guilty last month to four federal charges, including carjacking resulting in death. His trial is set for November.

Co-defendant, Laurence Lovette, is also charged in Carson's death but isn't eligible for the death penalty.

I'm not for the death penalty, especially with young dummies like these. Nothing will bring back Eve to her loving friends and family. However, these boys can never be allowed to wander the streets again. Whatever's cheaper--death or life in prison, go for it.

This is absolutely amazing!!!!!

It should not cost so much to achieve justice via the death penalty. Administrative costs as well as the lengthy appeals process is what drives up these costs into the millions of dollars. This is done on purpose by anti-death penalty advocates to deter seeking the death penalty. After conviction, one should be given 30 days to appeal. After that, inject the needle and good riddance!!!!!

While I would agree that the

While I would agree that the death penalty should be given to ALL murderers, unfortunately it's becoming a matter of money these days... It could take decades before it could take place, if it happens, by then the State could have spent anywhere between $1.4 to $2.9 MILLION dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry, but life in prison is cheaper. and these individuals simply don't deserve that much money to put into them.
