Saturday was the first Farmers’ Market of the year in downtown Wilmington. Plenty of people showed up to check out the plants and produce of farmers from all over southeastern North Carolina. Wilmington’s Park and Recreation Department started the Farmers’ Market in 2004, as an effort to encourage people to buy local produce. Farmers said it’s always tough to decide what to bring to the first market of the season. “We have to pick out the stuff that we think the customers will buy, but mostly we know that they’ll buy the vegetable plants and the pretty geraniums that we grow,” said Glenda Milliken. Farmers said the nice weather made the first event of the season a success. The Farmers’ Market will run every Saturday until December 19th, from 8 am until 1 pm.
