New Hanover County, NC (WWAY) – A New Hanover High School basketball star will stay in town to play college ball.

Freddie Jackson still has one more year at New Hanover. But Monday he announced his commitment to play at UNCW. As a six foot three point guard Jackson helped lead the Wildcats to the east regional finals with a 20-8 record this year.

Jackson says conversations with new UNCW Coach Buzz Peterson helped him make the decision.

“We had our little UNCW camp and I met with him and just talked about everything,” said Jackson. “He made me feel so comfortable and I walked away from there, from that day thinking about it. And I’ve just been thinking about it ever since.”

Jackson, who averaged better than 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists last year with the Wildcats says he looks forward to improving those numbers this year.
