LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Leland’s mayor continues fighting the proposed project Cape Fear Skyway project. Mayor Walter Futch held a meeting at Leland Town Hall today. He spelled out all the reasons he’s against the proposed Skyway.

By 2050, Leland is expected to have a population of 100,000 people, which is nearly the size of Wilmington today. The mayor doesn’t want land locked down for the Skyway which otherwise could help Leland grow.

The billion-dollar project has its supporters. They claim the 9.5 miles of a toll road will help thin traffic into Brunswick and New Hanover Counties.

Put a tunnel under the river-
Widen the causeway between Leland and the Cape Fear Bridge to 3 lanes in each direction.
Landowners around Skyway right of way want to get top dollar for their land.
Just who is going to pay all these tolls to use the skyway?
Wilmington was already pegged as having lower than average wages with a high cost of living.
    Jobs are leaving the area.
I’m sure tourists would be thrilled with the thought of tolls.
Keep telling it like it is Mr Futch!

  • I agree with the Mayor 100%.Some people who want this sky-way have something to gain. Why do I say this? One reason is they built the Martin King high-way to by-pass W[lmington (AROUND MARKET STREET},then they come in with a bright idea to build another by-pass around Wilmington and call in I0140 by-pass.Now you have two of the best roads around Wilmington, and the CITY wants to put a main hi-way thur the heart of town.I believe if you put in the rest of I-140 you would do away with people going thur Leland. If our so called D.O.T. would check out where these people they would find out that they live on the other side of Leland where the I-140 would serve them ,and would stay away from hi-way 17.I also agree with the Mayor ==FIX WHAT YOU GOT BEFORE YOU MAKE ANOTHER MESS WITH ANOYHER BOTTLE NECK—-THANKS FOR HEARING ME OUT ALTON DAVIS AT SNEE FARMS

From the story: “By 2050, Leland is expected to have a population of 100,000 people, which is nearly the size of Wilmington today.”

And this idiot can’t see that another route into Wilmington would be a benefit not only to the residents of Leland that work in Wilmington, but for people in Wilmington that want to go to Myrtle Beach. Wait, I got it. If there is a new route people may quit stopping in Podunk, err I mean Leland.

Sappos family ownes property on both sides of the river and have a lot to gain with this project. The people who work for DOT should be drug tested for some of the things they have come up with in Wilmington.
