WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY)– 20 minutes. That’s all the time it takes Danielle Richardet and her daughter to collect 526 cigarette butts from Wrightsville Beach bringing their 21 day total of butts collected from the shore to 9,253.

Richardet has made it her mission to clean up the oceanfront and teach her kids a valuable lesson. She says, “We always pick up litter wherever we go. As parents, we teach our kids if you see a piece of litter, pick it up because you shouldn’t expect anyone else to pick it up after you because there might not be someone else.”

Her children are not the only one’s being impacted by this lesson – Richardet recently won Brita’s FilterForGood Film Project contest hosted on Facebook. Of 150 projects submitted from across the country, Our Daily Ocean: A Story of Butts was chosen by voters to be made into a film that will debut at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in January.

“It’s pretty rewarding to know that people care about what we’re doing and that there’s especially community support for the project,” Richardet says.

The importance of cleaning up the beaches is not only important here in North Carolina but globally. Richardet says that even though she is doing here part, she can’t do it alone and she hopes that the film will motivate others to clean up their own communities.

San Diego’s “Sundance Kid” Director Destin Cretton will be in Wrightsville Beach to begin filming in December.

If you see someone in a car littering you should report them. Here’s the link to the Swat-a-litterbug website.

Go to this DOT website and enter in the date, time, county, street and vehicle license plate. Then type up “Slob (driver/passenger) threw their cigarette butt out the window.”

it’s not just WB…take a look at ANY intersection in town..smokers think the planet is their personal little ash tray. Its SICK and it burns me up to see someone throw a cigarette butt out their window! Maybe someone should start a website called…buttlitter.com and let people snap photos of vehicles and tag numbers of the rear ends that do it!

It is too bad we have to put us with inconsiderate people littering in our town. Every intersection, parking lot, private and public spaces are littered with cigarette butts. The people who throw them down are PIGS!
Here is an excellent way to improve our entire community, including the schools. Enforce the littering laws and fine everyone who throws their buts on the ground $100, $500 and $1,000 for repeat offenders. The tax coffers would overflow!

Cleanup of the butts is commendable, and does bring focus on this problem. But the organizer should have required the students to wear gloves when collecting the butts. There could be health issues involved.

I watch everyday as people sit on the campus benches and throw butts on the ground right next to the dispensers. We live in an age that has too many idiots without a clue. You want to smoke? Fine, but throw the butt in the trash.

That’s approximately finding one every 2 seconds. WB must be a lot nastier than I remember. I have a hard time beleiving they find this many in such a short amount of time. Not saying littering isn’t a problem on the beach, but I’ve never seen this many butts anywhere, even on a bar-room floor like Red Dogs. Either way, thank you to the Richardets for helping keep the beach clean.
