BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Commissioners decided to re-new their funding agreement with the school board.
Since 1995, the county and the school board have had a funding agreement. County commissioners ended that this year because of the economy. On Monday night, the commissioners decided to give a percentage of the county’s ad-valorem tax money to the school system for the next two years.
“If we hadn’t gone ahead with this agreement we’re going to take a much bigger hit this year from the state and it would mean we were going to start losing teachers I’m afraid so this will keep us from having to do that,” said Brunswick County School Board Chair Shirley Babson.
Babson says Brunswick County Schools lost about $5 million dollars from the state this year.
