WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The holidays are over, but people some will still be receiving some gifts. It was pick-up day here at WWAY.

Tom Russell came by the station to pick up donations for Packages from Home. Russell founded the group Step up for Soldiers, a non-profit who’s focus is to help servicemen and women who need it when they return home from their tour of duty. It also helps send Packages from Home with donated items collected during the holidays.

“Packages from Home is a way of keeping the homefront close and letting them know there are people here who still care,” Russell said. “It is the everyday product that they miss. It brings it home to the soldier.”

All of the items will be sent to Marines in Afghanistan. WWAY and The Big Talker were the official media partner of this year’s event.

Today was pick up day, but if you would like to drop off any goods to be sent overseas, you can stop by the station at 615 N. Front Street in Downtown Wilmington before Friday.

I still feel it would be VERY nice for all the local area hotels to give the small personal items that they give to travelers that forget theirs. IE shampoo, lotion, toothbrushes and on and on.. now they really would be stepping up ….
