WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW held Delaware leading scorer Jawan Carter without a field goal in the first 30 minutes and used balanced scoring to blister the Blue Hens, 76-53, in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball game on Wednesday at Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks won for the fourth time in five outings to improve to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in the CAA. The Blue Hens dropped their second straight and stand 7-8 and 2-3. It was UNCW’s seventh consecutive win over the Blue Hens at Trask.
Senior guard Chad Tomko matched his season high of 23 points to lead all scorers. Sophomore guard Keith Rendleman scored 15 points and grabbed 11 boards for his third double-double of the season and the fourth of his career.
Freshman guard Tanner Milson doled out a career-high six assists as UNCW shot 49.1 percent from the floor for the game.
Freshman guard Devon Saddler paced the Blue Hens with 19 points and Carter added 13.
UNCW held UD to 28.6 percent shooting and forced seven turnovers to build a 34-21 lead at halftime and then poured it on in the second half.
Three-pointers by freshman guard Donte Morales, who added 11 points, and Tomko wrapped around a dunk by Rendleman extended the lead to 44-25 at the 17-minute mark of the second half. The Seahawks posted their largest lead of the contest, 65-39, with 5:48 on the clock when Tomko made consecutive trifectas.
In the first half, UD grabbed a brief 4-3 edge on Josh Brinkley’s monster dunk at 16:29 before the Seahawks came alive. Trevor Deloach started a 10-2 run with a jumper in the paint and a bank shot along the right baseline by Matt Wilson gave the Seahawks a 13-6 advantage with just over 12 minutes left in the period.
UNCW used another 14-2 spurt later in the half to build its largest lead of the half, 27-10. Back-to-back triples by Ahmad Grant and Tomko put the Seahawks ahead by 17 points with 6:55 remaining in the half.
UD reeled off nine unanswered points, keyed by Saddler, to chop the lead to 27-19 until UNCW scored seven of the last nine points in the period to take a 34-21 cushion into the break.
The Seahawks open a two-game road trip on Saturday with a 7 p.m. matchup against James Madison at the JMU Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, Va. The Blue Hens conclude a three-game road trip by visiting Towson on Saturday at Noon.
