RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Former House Speaker Harold Brubaker is poised to become the chief budget-writer in his chamber under its new Republican majority.

The likely next speaker – Rep. Thom Tillis – announced Tuesday that Brubaker will head the powerful House Appropriations Committee. Brubaker was speaker from 1995 to 1998 and is entering his 18th House term. Brubaker will be the chief chair among four to run the budget panel with Reps. Jeff Barnhart and Linda Johnson of
Concord and Mitch Gillespie of Marion.

Tillis also said Reps. Julia Howard of Mocksville and Edgar Starnes and Mitchell Setzer – both of Catawba County – will lead the House Finance Committee. Rep. Leo Daughtry of Smithfield will be chairman of a consolidated judiciary panel and Rep. Danny McComas in charge of the commerce committee.
