THE FOLLOWING IS FROM A NEWS RELEASE FROM THE WILMINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT:

A fight in front of the Rhino Club, 125 Market Street, has resulted in the death of a Wilmington man.

The incident was reported at 2:12 a.m. on Monday morning. According to witnesses, a large crowd from the club exited at closing time and a fight broke out. Witnesses said 30 – 40 people were involved. Three men were stabbed. All three victims were driven to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center by people at the scene. One of the men, age 20, had been stabbed in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other two victims are being treated for stab wounds that do not appear to be life-threatening.

The name of the man who died will be released later today. This death is the first homicide reported in 2011.

A second violent incident, possibly related to the incident in front of the Rhino Club, was reported within a few minutes of the stabbings. Two men were shot in the 600 block of Emory Street at about 2:30 a.m. (approximate time). One was grazed by a shot to the head and the other was shot in the back. Neither of their wounds appears to be life-threatening. The victims told investigating WPD officers that they had witnessed the fight in front of the Rhino Club. They reported that they left the area and drove into the Creekwood community. They said that when they pulled in, someone opened fire on them from another vehicle.

Anyone with information about either of these cases is asked to call the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3600. Information may be submitted anonymously through Text-A-Tip. Text Tip708 and the information, and send to CRIMES (274637).

I left Wilmington back in

I left Wilmington back in 1998. Every time I go back its for a funeral from a shooting death. What is really going on in the city these days, I can't believe this is the place I grew up. Looking at these comments on here....if it is these young african american males causing all these issues downtown...we need to take accountability for are people. This is not about race-if is where Mexicans ripping stuff up we wouldn't them downtown either.

More police needed

Saffo is right--we need to maintain adequate size police force to reduce chance of more repeats

not enough focus

There was not enough focus in his talk about how he will address ongoing crime issue in city downtown--short term council must do so.

As an African American male

As an African American male I'm just embarrassed at the events that took place that night. We can blame whites for being racist well stop giving them ammunition to use against us!!! I can imagine it was a mad house down there that night with others looking at us like they're animals. If the you don't like the perception don't live the stereotype. As an educated, young black male I always took pride in not living out the stereotypes associated with us as some blacks just seem to have no shame. Whites if you want to blame somebody blame these liberals who thought it was a good idea to build an urban, poor economy off black's back in the 60s and 70s through the War on poverty with government programs. The problems blacks face today were predicted almost 40-50 years ago by Patrick Moyhinan(spelling) under the the JFK administration. His report on blacks and urban poverty predicted and stated that government programs that were targeted at black communities with no consideration to the culture of blacks would send the race spiraling down, and it did. Liberals feed off this urban economy as it provides jobs for them at the expense of everyone tax dollars, discourages blacks from improving their own situation because daddy government is there to fit the bill, and little can be done about it. Blacks say hey racism DOES exist but you have more opportunity now than ever take advantage of it rather waiting for a government issue check to come, they're accused being white and casted out of the black community because they don't follow the program of being a victim with no power to change their circumstances. Other races comment on the obvious they're accused of being racist by both blacks and liberals who are upset you're endangering their urban pimp hustle. Liberals provide excuses on why we can't get it together so a relationship has been formed. Its said plain and simple.....

How dare any of you comment

How dare any of you comment on TAARON!You dont even know him!!At the end of the day someones mother has to burying her son!!He was a brother and great friend!!No matter what he did in his PAST he still was human!!We all make mistakes and do wrong..BUT NOBODY SHOULD HAVE TO DIE LIKE HE DIED!!NOBODY!!HIS FRIENDS WATCHED HIM TAKE HIS LAST BREATH!!WHAT WOULD YALL HAVE TO SAY IF THIS WAS YOUR FAMILY??COME ON NOW!!LETS GET SERIOUS

tell it to this losing network

your feelings seem genuine--but you have a network that knew by smearing a deadman they would incite this kind of racism and hurtful comments---they want ratings--dont care who they harm in process.
Ignore them and these c5razy comments---pity their ignorance

Yes we dare...

I really lack the ability to understand what all the fuss is about. He was not exactly what you would consider an up standing young lad. But here is a news flash for ya cowboy, if you live your life the way he chose to live his, then yes you deserve to die the same way you lived.

yes we should....

not that the guy was a saint---but why bring up all this dirt in background--to provoke thought or to incite ignorant-hate filled comments--that's the fuss and maybe we should care---about enquirer like innuendo-it brings out the worst in wilmington

you are right wway is cruel

No one should have trashed a man who has died----his past does not deserve the kind of hate engendered by this venemous reporting

Cruel?

If you live like a thug, and die like a thug, then you can expect to be remembered as nothing more than a thug. Nothing cruel about the facts.

What's venemous about this

What's venemous about this reporting? As a civil human being my heart does go out to the loved ones who commended a son, brother and father to a premature eternal rest.

But, the cold, hard and callous fact remains that there are conditions in our city's downtown that do make it unsafe. I appreciate the news coverage of these events. The knowledge from this reporting tells me to stay away. WWAY told us, the public what this really was, a gangland murder.

I'm sorry that some gangsta "five star general" got shanked, BUT, better him than me.

I AGREE WITH SOME OF THE CAUCASIANS..

I am African American, I'm from Wilmington but moved away many years ago..I do come home to visit family but I do not like to stay there long. When I come home to visit, it is so depressing. I was raised in Creekwood and I always made a promise to myself I wouldn't become a product of my environment. And as for those that say it's how you're raised? No it's not...I was raised with no dad and had a mom strung out on drugs. I didn't turn out bad at all...I went to college, got my Degree, got a good job, and left Wilmington. We as blacks are killing one another, and it be over some stupid stuff. Wilmington have all these so called Gang wanna be's such as bloods and crips..that's what this fight was all about. Bloods against the Crips, which are all BLACK GANGS!! Don't go around blaming the caucasians, the police, or the media for what we are doing to ourselves!! It saddens me that we as African Americans can't get along with one another!! Will this violence ever end????

Thank God someone understands

Thanks for telling the truth. Perhaps you will have more credibility than this old White guy.

Has anyone thought of

Has anyone thought of putting a reasonable solution on here? WOW! I have lived in Wilmington for 40 years now and rarely visit downtown, especially at night. However, I recently went on a Saturday night just to see what all the hype is about. I was totally amazed at the amount of clubs, as well as the crowd. I saw young people so intoxicated/drugged up that they could hardly walk down the street. What came to my mind? A breeding ground for trouble. And yes, I saw police presence. Unfortunately, all 6 officers were hanging out together in one ally. Not sure how this helps with monitoring the streets. So, here are a few suggestions to offer up:

1. Police officers just need to be assigned to certain streets, and be vigilant. Hanging out in an ally does not show a great presence.

2. The club owers should invest in a hand-held license scanner that can network them together for monitoring patrons that may need to be banned from the clubs for a period of time.

3. Bouncers should be trained to see trouble brewing. Don't even wait for something to happen. Any sign of trouble....ask for a license, scan it, and place that person on the banned list for all the clubs. Then politely ask them to leave. Request police escort if necessary. If the bar owners work together on something like this then people will think twice before starting trouble in fear of losing their playground for a few months.

4. Club owners and all workers should be trained to spot gang members and issues. Gang members will always flag themsleves in one way or another. And all races join gangs so please don't take this as a racist comment. When you are aware of gang representations, and what gangs rival which, you will have a clue if there are potential problems in your club.

5. Police officers also just need to start arresting folks. It may be overwhelming at first but a strong message will be sent that enough is enough.

Meanwhile, all that visit downtown...take care and watch yourselves. Its a terrible thing when someone goes out to have a good time and winds up hurt or dying. My heart goes out to the family of the young man killed last night. Whatever the reason for the violence, it could never be good enough for a life.

homocide downtown wilmington

If people would police themselves, then Wilmington, USA and the whole world would be wonderful. People need to learn how to act like adults.

status quo not acceptable

we tolerated high crime rate downtwon for too long--when will we act?

Complete ignorance

Someone please tell me how some of these people have the nerve to post some of these comments on here..we all no matter what our color all bleed the same and no one is better than the next..I am shocked to see that we are in 2011 and still have so much racism going on..get over it..you are no better than the next person that stands beside you..We have lost another child here and all everybody can say is oh beacause the color of his skin is why it happened?? no matter why it happened this young child has a family who is going through something that alot of us would never be able to handle..if everyone spent as much time trying to see why this happened and who is to blame instead of posting all this negativity maybe the family could at least have some closure..stop fighting with each other over stupid issues like the color of somebody's skin and do something positive for the community to prevent something this tragic from happening..

station bias and inept

facts are fair game---but hurtful comments with sole purpose of encouraging comments of bias and ignorance have no place. Like others have said pickey is pathetic, he doent care what he suggests as long as the nuts come out and comment. Arent we all weary of this koind of poor reporting---and a board filled with ignorance and bias.

WILMINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT DOES NOTHING TO HELP THE SITUATION..I PERSONALLY WITNESSED TWO COP CARS RIDE BY THE SCENE OF THE FIGHT LAST NIGHT BEFORE THE ALTERCATION ACTUALLY TOOK PLACE, AS A MEMBER OF LAW ENFORCEMENT YOU SHOULD NOT HESITATE TO STEP IN AN BREAK UP A FIGHT BEFORE IT HAPPENS. IF YOU WILL NOT STEP IN AND HELP(SEEING YOU HAVE PEPPER SPRAY, BATON, GUN,ETC...AND THE AUTHORITY TO USE ALL OF THOSE,) THEN HOW IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU EXPECT A BOUNCER TO STEP IN AND TRY TO BREAK IT UP...I PERSONALLY THINK THAT SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS DOWNTOWN COULD BE SOLVED IF THE POLICE WOULD BE MORE OF AN ASSISTANCE..WITH NOT JUST THE BLACK CLUBS THE WHITE CLUBS ALSO, AND EVEN THE MEXICAN CLUB 609.

Self control

You said the police rode by the scene of the fight BEFORE the altercation took place. Do you expect them to have ESP that a fight was going to break out? If they used pepper spray, baton, gun, etc. BEFORE the fight broke out, everyone would be screaming that the police were racist. Quit blaming the police and put the fault where it belongs... on those who started the fight. Kids today need to learn more self control, period.

You'd be the first to scream

You'd be the first to scream foul too when someone gets roughed up be the police. Society is also responsible for their actions.

Hey Cupcake....

So you saw two cop cars ride by the scene BEFORE the fight took place. So they were in the area and patroling. I am assuming you think they have the ability to see into the future? Maybe they should have stopped and just stood there for a few days just to see if MAYBE a fight might break out in the near future. Can you really be that stupid? Hey I know, maybe cops should have to just work in the bars all night and clean up after idiots such as yourself. Screw the rest of the city right???? They are not babysitters. If you morons can't go out and have a drink without acting like complete idiots, then so be it.

Murder downtown

Maybe it's time for the Wilmington Police department to re-examine downtown laws and codes.

It's been reported, someone died, others were injured in late night violence in Downtown.

Having a concealed carry permit, and a legally purchased handgun, in order to enjoy the river-walk and walk my dog, I must go unarmed.

No thanks. Tourist may think Wilmington is fairly crime free, but the stats don't lie.

The few times I have gone to the river-walk, and been harassed by homeless people wanting cigarettes, and crackheads wanting money have convinced me to take my business and my dog elsewhere.

Wilmington should take a hard look at what kind of business, and customers they are trying to attract, and adjust laws and ordinances accordingly.

Lastly, Wilmington Downtown Inc executive director John Hinnant should stick to doing whatever it is that he does. What that is, is a mystery to me, as it goes from Ambassador's without guns, to criticizing the ALE.

Is it true Wilmington has no public drunkenness law?

Rhino Club

ALE needs to step up and investigate this matter. If the patrons were from the Rhino, then pull their license at this point. Anyone can be stabbed downtown. Why were the police not watching their high tech camera system during this time, especially at this intersection where it appears fights occur nightly? They have cameras on the parking decks to monitor this area. The city has cut the police funding for downtown patrols. Why not bring in part time officers that work strictly on the weekends. They can build a relationship with the law abiding citizens and address the unruly crowds as well. The parking lot at the corner of Second and Market becomes a hang out area for the patrons from the Rox and the Rhino primarily as well as a couple of other establishments. Yes the owner of the clubs has a responsibility for their patrons after they leave after consuming alcohol in their establishments. This is one of the main purposes of the ALE. They need to confirm where the patrons were and address the responsible parties by fines, pulling their ABC licenses. Surfcity Tom you think this might fall under the "DRAM" Shop liability statue for North Carolina?

Dram shop laws have nothing

Dram shop laws have nothing to do with this incident 18B-121.

IT DID NOT HAPPEN AT RHINO

IT DID NOT HAPPEN AT RHINO CLUB SO PLEASE STOP SAYING THAT SMDH IT HAPPEN AT SLICE OF LIFE DOWN TOWN PLEASE YALL GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT

huhh?

What in Gods name does this smdh stuff mean? I see multiple posts with this gibberish...is it some kind of gang code or something?

What?

Put down your pipe, sober up and try posting again.

Honestly

Have you ever met a racist person that you were envious of? I certainly haven't. Let them spew their hatred, they live miserable lives.
