FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) — Three former state Senate Democrats are suing their successful opponents and the Republican Party over campaign ads.

The Fayetteville Observer reports that former senators Margaret Dickson, Joe Sam Queen and Don Davis say that ads run against them contained false information.

Attorney John Wallace represents all three and says a Republican Party organization paid for the ads, but disclaimers in the ads said they were paid for by the GOP candidates.

All three Democrats were beaten in November, part of the sweep that gave Republicans control of the North Carolina Senate for the first time since 1870.

A state Republican spokesman says the party’s lawyers are reviewing the complaint.
