RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s US senators are backing legislation to care for people whose health problems may be linked to tainted water at Camp Lejeune.

Sen. Richard Burr introduced a bill Thursday that would require the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide health care for veterans and family members with problems stemming from contaminated water at the Marine Corps base.

Sen. Kay Hagan says she’ll co-sponsor the bill.

Wells at Camp Lejeune were contaminated by fuel leaks and other sources from the 1950s to the 1980s. Health officials think as many as 1 million people may have been exposed.

Federal researchers are still studying whether mortality rates are higher for Marines who served at the base before the wells were closed.
