RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A nationwide drive by conservatives to push back federal authority by claiming state authority is more important under the Constitution is showing up in politically moderate North Carolina.

Republicans backing the legislation contend the Constitution’s 10th Amendment strictly limits the federal government and that everything else is up to the states.

Republican Rep. George Cleveland of Onslow County introduced a resolution Thursday stressing North Carolina’s sovereignty over certain powers.

Rep. Glen Bradley of Franklin County is rounding up co-sponsors for bills taking on federal food-safety and gun laws. The freshman Republican wants to exempt North Carolina farm products and firearms from federal regulations if their goods are made and sold within the state.
