WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A special event for heart disease awareness was marked by women in red today. The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation hosted the Red Dress Luncheon and Fashion Show.

Today’s event was hosted by Chelsea Alltman, Miss USA 2005.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women.

“If we can get one woman to go to the emergency room the minute she has any sign or symptom of a heart attack, we can save her life, and that’s what we’re trying to promote here,” NHRMC Foundation Executive Director Aline Lasseter said.

Money raised for the annual event goes to support education and provide free cholesterol screenings for women in the community.
