WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was two shootings with one thing in common: the suspect.

“I really thought Dwayne Moore was going to be brought to justice and tried and all that,” said Shaun Delancey, who was Tiffany Dawkins’s boyfriend and the father of her children. “I didn’t think he was the type of person to take his own life and take the easy way out.”

Raw footage shows a stand-off between US Marshals and Orange County deputies and Moore at a Florida hotel this afternoon just before he took his own life.

“I can say this was a different situation than previous incidents where this was not an interview,” said Frank Chiumento, who is with the US Marshal Service. “We had information that we believed he was in this room, and we approached it not as an interview, but as a situation where we were going to apprehend a violent felon.”

Moore, who had an extensive rap sheet, fled Wilmington after Wilmington Police say he shot his girlfriend Kayla Floyd in the chest this week. He was facing attempted murder charges and was a suspect in the 2009 murder of Tiffany Dawkins in Pender County. Delancey says he would have liked to seen Moore face the consequences of his actions.

“He still took the easy way out,” Delancey said. “Tiffany didn’t have that choice. Kayla didn’t have that choice, and he was able to make that choice and take his own life, and it’s kind of unfair, but it’s kind of a win-win situation.”

Delancey said Moore’s suicide is not much closure, but he says he will sleep soundly Friday night. Since Dawkins’s death two days after Christmas 2009, Delancey has feared for the safety of her family and her two daughters, who Delancey is now raising.

“I’ll take what I can get,” Delancey said. “The family will take what they can get. At least we know in our hearts that he was responsible for Tiffany’s death, and we’re glad we no longer have to live in fear.”

New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David says Dawkins’s murder investigation will remain open.

I’m puzzled, the family is now coming forward after 2 years with evidences pointing to this person stating that he killed this woman, WOW!!! Why wasn’t he brought in for questioning before this incident happen??? I’m glad that the DA is not closing the case, because I believe the murder is still out there!!

If this young man was the suspect why wasnt he arrested in the first murder? Is it because they didnt have enough evidence to arrest him? I don’t think it’s fair to prosecute him now that he is deceased seeing as the case is still open. The real murderer could still be on the lose. Im just saying?! May everyone involved find some peace.
