RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Debate on legislation designed to improve the reputation and operations at the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory has been delayed.

Lawmakers wanted more data on how the bill would affect the state prison system so they pushed debate set for Thursday back to next Tuesday.

The bill would make clear that someone who willfully withholds lab tests from attorneys in a case should be charged with a crime, possibly felony obstruction of justice

The measure would rename the lab the North Carolina State Crime Laboratory and create a standing advisory panel to regularly review its scientific work.
