Southport needs a new city manager. Mayor Robert Howard confirmed Alan Thornton quit his job during last night’s Board of Aldermen meeting.

The State Port Pilot reports the board accepted Thornton’s resignation by a 5-1 vote after an hour-long closed session.

The Board named City clerk Regina Alexander interim manager. The Board also recessed its meeting until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, when it will begin discussions on finding a new city manager.

Mayor Howard would not tell us why Thornton resigned. When we asked the mayor if Thornton had submitted a written resignation, he refused to answer the question.

Good luck finding city or county commissioners who know what they are doing. Their primary talent seems to be to hire consultants who are supposed to tell them what they are doing. Usually at $30,000 a pop.

    Ever wonder about that?

Wow! Maybe the city and county managers here in Wilmington and New Hanover County could follow suit. Let’s lose the specially educated bureaucrats and begin to elect commissioners who know what they’re doing.

Yup… politicians are universally asleep at the switch. About the only one in recent time that I have any trust in is Thom Goolsby.

OK, I’ve come to the conclusion that anyone who runs for public office or accepts a position like this in North Carolina is mentally deficient. ANYONE who would want such a thankless job must not have any common sense. I honestly think that an NC public leader could single handedly put us into a monetary surplus, lower taxes, increase education funding, increase job creation, cure cancer and people here would still accuse them of being a good ole’ boy and profiting from it all somehow. Granted, our current politicians are not perfect and certainly we have a lot of issues to deal with, but they are the ones who stepped up to the plate and apparently a majority of people voted for them. More than I can say about 100% of the whiners. At this point i’m just glad that someone is willing to endure the crap they have to go through, because I sure wouldn’t to make the pittance they make. So far I have yet to see any real proof they are profiting from anything beyond their salary…
