EDNEYVILLE, NC (AP) — A wildfire burning near Chimney Rock has now scorched more than 1,000 acres and could get more intense with warm temperatures and wind this weekend.
The state Forest Service says the Jude’s Gap fire will likely consume more than 1,500 acres.
Nearly 200 firefighters from local, state and federal agencies are working to contain the blaze. The fire started Saturday. Officials say they’ve spent more than $174,000 fighting the fire.
The Forest Service is worried that warm temperatures and wind expected Friday and Saturday will make the fire more intense.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Hundreds of brush fires have been reported across the state this week.
