WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Violence in downtown Wilmington has been making news. Now the Chief of Police has an idea to make things better.

At a City Council work session and budget retreat today, Chief Ralph Evangelous said beefing up security downtown is necessary for the city.

Downtown can be scary, especially after dark. Many people think more needs to be done to keep the area safe. At today's meeting, Chief Evangelous said he agrees.

He presented a plan to the council that would allow ten officers to patrol the area, both day and night to ensure safety. This is five more officers than are already assigned to the patrol.

Evangelous said this would allow for a new direction for downtown.

"This will allow us to have a real focused approach to the issues downtown late at night, as well as to have a presence seven days a week downtown during the day time," Evangeouls said.

Evangelous said it would be both the responsibility of the police department to reorganize its staff and of the city council to supply the funding for this project to work properly.

police downtown

What an excellent idea. Why has no one thought of this before?

Under the bus

Anyone else here have the feeling that Evangelous is gonna get thrown under the bus by Cheatum and company pretty soon?

didn't he say more police

didn't he say more police was NOT the answer after the stabbing death downtown? More police won't help, but better police will.

GREAT IDEA

WELL FIRST YOU GOT TO GET THE LAZY FIVE COPS ALREADY DOWNTOWN OFF THEIR BUNS AND START ARRESTING PEOPLE ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE WITNESSES TO A CRIME. COPS LET PEOPLE GO ALL THE TIME. COME ON IF YOU ARE SERIOUS YOU NEED COPS TO POLICE YOUR COPS...WHAT A JOKE!

Nice

Check your keyboard and see if there is a button labeled 'Caps Lock' and press it once. Now if the police start arresting for every little offense there won't be any police downtown because they will all be at Blue Clay Rd doing the booking and processing. Then downtown won't have chance because you would be scared that if you spit on the sidewalk you might get arrested or if all the police are busy, robbed. You sir are the joke.

Hopefully, the bar owners

Hopefully, the bar owners whose patrons are 90% of the problem will pay their fair share for the added security instead of the taxpayers who are home where they belong minding their own business..

That's a start

Problems in the City of Wilmington will continue as long as gang activity and crime thrives. The gangs need to be broken up for good and the revolving door for criminals must be slammed shut. Drug dealers and violent offenders are arrested one day and turned loose the next. There is no deterrent for career criminals.
