WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A UNCW spokesperson tells us the university has six students studying abroad in New Zealand. Five are on the north island in locations that are safe from any damage caused by Monday’s earthquake.

One student, though, is studying at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, where the earthquake hit. The university confirmed she was not hurt and is safe, but her housing accommodations were damaged.

UNCW is trying to connect to the student’s parents to see if they are open to talking to media or helping media contact the student for an interview.
