MARSHALL, NC (AP) -- The daughter of civil rights leader Malcolm X has been ordered to stay in a North Carolina jail for at least a week as authorities in New York City make plans to pick her up to face larceny, forgery and identity theft charges.
A lawyer for 45-year-old Malikah Shabazz says a judge denied bond Tuesday, but will reconsider his ruling if she has not been returned to New York by March 4.
Prosecutors in Queens, N.Y., say warrants were issued in 2009 against Shabazz. Authorities say she stole the identity of a 70-year-old woman and ran up more than $55,000 in credit card charges.
Shabazz's lawyer Sean Devereux says the allegations are not true.
Shabazz was arrested at her new home in Mars Hill on Friday.
