In July of last year, Brunswick County Commissioner Charles Warren was appointed by his fellow commissioners to serve as a board member of the Department of Social Services. Not only did he assume his duties as a DSS board member, but he eventually became chairman of the board as well.

According to Commissioner Warren, the first African-American Brunswick County commissioner to be elected in 28 years when he took the seat in 2008, a storm began brewing in September when a decision was made to terminate the director of DSS.

Out of this story I got the following, The NC Supreme Court and the Council of Government supports Charles. Now what I don’t see is any documentation from the Coucil of Government that says that they support him, the Region O COG office is right here in Wilmington so I hope WWAY will visit them to get their true opinion. As for the Supreme Court, the ruling they are trying to use to call “Support” deals with something totally different then what this issue is, the fact that they ruled that one could finish a term after their commission term had expired in no way relates to a Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct enacted by a county that lets not forget he voted in favor of, said he read it, but no one explained it to him.
As I have read and understood from the begining of this issue, it has always stated unless the appointment is “required” under state statute, there are more than the Health Board that are required by statute. as for the two committees that were discussed (college president search and hospital use) these would be Adhoc committees that do not make the decision for either issue, one will be decided by the Board of Trustee’s for the college and the other will be decided by the County Commissioners.
Please get us more facts on this, there is alot of digging that can be done.
