CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — Red Cross officials say blood donations have fallen behind in the Carolinas.

The Daily Tar Heel of Chapel Hill reports that blood collections in January were the lowest in a decade.

Officials say bad weather in January was partially responsible for the drop in donations. Additional blood drives are being scheduled across the state to rebuild supplies. The Orange County Red Cross has 13 blood drives scheduled this month.

Carolinas Red Cross spokeswoman Debbie Estes says a pint of donated blood can save up to three people. All blood types are needed, especially O negative. Plasma and platelet donations are also needed for their clotting factors.
