DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A family business is nearly destroyed after an early morning fire in Duplin County. It happened at a turkey farm near Richlands.

The family tells us they were raising more than 6,000 turkeys on the property. They were only able to save 50 birds.

Heather Huffman woke early this morning to an urgent phone call from her stepfather. He’d heard a loud boom and rushed to see the family turkey farm up in flames. The fire was moving rapidly toward Heather’s home, propelled by high winds.

She got her family out safely and ran to save as many of the young turkeys as she could.
