WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – R3 finally spoke up today. But not to taxpayers of this county via the media about missing deadlines or the lack of financing.

No, it chose to lash out at the media via Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/R3-Environmental/117003118342159). For the first time since last July, someone at R3 posted a comment defining Yellow Journalism. It’s assumed the comment was aimed at this TV station for trying to hold it accountable to the promises it made to New Hanover County.

It reads: Yellow journalism is a type of journalism that presents little or no legitimate well-researched news and instead uses eye-catching headlines to sell more newspapers. Techniques may include exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism. By extension “Yellow Journalism” is used today as a pejorative …to decry any journalism that treats news in an unprofessional or unethical fashion.

“I’m glad an R3 employee finally spoke up and said something,” said WWAY News Director Scott Pickey. “But lashing out at us for trying to hold this company accountable is just childish. Perception is reality. If you’re on the verge of a multi-million dollar project and your home office is abandoned and you refuse to call the media back for weeks, what are we to think? All Ms. Grathwol has to do is pick up the phone, call our newsroom and check in. It’s that simple.”

WWAY has pretty much become nothing but steamy headlines and crazy accusations, and they most definitely think that everyone owes them a response. This company is a private one, and is not required to talk to the media. To their customer, the county/city, yes, but not the media.

The truth

Accept it WWAY. They were talking about you. You are Yellow Journalism at it finest. They don’t have to respond to you in any way. What makes you think that everyone owes you a response to sell your story? Please. I would tell you to go to Hell. I ran you off from a situation a few years ago when you stuck your camera in my face and I will next time as well.

When a company does business with the government and is paid by tax money, it is doing business with the tax payers. WWAY is a tax paying company in New Hanover County therefor they are a customer. It really is just that simple.

…and complain about their reporting. You constantly criticize their journalism and professionalism, yet you consistently read WWAY’s articles and post your incessant bitching about things you appear to know very little about. If you have so much time to waste everyday, why don’t you march into WWAY’s studio and demand a job as one of thier journalists? You think know so much and criticize everything, so you must better than even Scott Pickey, so go for it or shut up. This forum is designed to discuss the articles, not dispute WWAY’s credentials and that always seems to be your intent.

Besides the above, It is a good thing that shoddy business serving our county at the EXPENSE of the TAXPAYER is exposed and put to task! We all know we cannot depend on our county council members to monitor what they vote in.

R3 may not be “required” to talk to the media, but when they refuse to do so as thay are doing, it is evident there is a great deal to hide!

“All Ms. Grathwol has to do is pick up the phone, call our newsroom and check in. It’s that simple.” Please don’t ignore us. We are important. Sounds like WWAY has their feelings hurt because someone is ignoring their request. I believe the definition of Yellow Journalism fits you like a glove. Calling them childish? Putting out an “APB” on Ms. Grathwol makes it appear as if law enforcement is after her, can’t get much more childish than that.

Get off it WWAY. No one, public or private, owes you anything. No one is under any obligation to talk to you.

I’ve yet to figure out why you are driving this story so hard. The result has made me sympathize more with R3 than demand any sort of accountability. In fact, it’s made me regret the idea of trying your site anew.

This article almost looks like an example of yellow journalism as defined by the R# posting. The only person interviewed for the story is your own news director. Furthermore, the R3 posting isn’t pointing fingers at WWAY, yet your writer seems to have decided that you are the sole target. This is a non-story, and you have sensationalized it. Hey wait! That word was in the very definition of Yellow Journalism!

Herman Cain says Liberals use SIN when they respond to tough situations.
S….shift the subject
I….ignore the facts
N….name call

Sounds like R3 has adopted a like philosophy.

R3 didn’t have a problem talking to the media when they were bidding on the contract. Yet now that everything has fallen apart, all they can do is counter with some misguided quote about Yellow Journalism. “Well-researched news” depends in large part on the willingness of the subject(s) to actually speak with the media. When they won’t talk to the media that does produce some eye-catching headlines only because everyone wants to know Who, What, Where, When, Why and How. When an organization such as R3 won’t speak, it leaves people on the edge of their seats waiting for information. The ball is in R3’s court. All they have to do is call the local television stations and print media and give interviews. Until then, suspicions will continue. The comments on their facebook page won’t satisfy the citizens because it doesn’t elaborate on their current situation.
