KNOXVILLE,NC (WWAY) — Former Appalachian State head basketball coach Houston Fancher was named director of video scouting for the men’s basketball team at the University of Tennessee eight months ago. Today his job duties increased immeasurably. Houston Fancher was named the interim head coach at Tennessee replacing Bruce Pearl. Fancher told the Knoxville News Sentinel, “If there’s anything I want to get across, it’s not about me accepting a position, it’s about me being here during the transition for the players, said Fancher, who is from Newport,TN. “The first thing I did when Mike offered me this opportunity was to call coach (Bruce) Pearl, and he gave me his blessing to do this.” Assistant coaches Jason Shay, Steve Forbes and Tony Jones have all been relieved of their duties at the University of Tennessee.
At Appalachian State Houston Fancher posted a 137-136 record as head coach. Fancher’s last season in Boone was 2008-2009. Buzz Peterson took over the ASU program in 2009. Peterson resigned a year later to take over at UNC Wilmington. Ironically former UNCW forwarded John Field left UNCW in 2010 in order to play his senior year at Tennessee.
