Carolina Beach council says no to bike week

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Will they or won't they? The talk of Carolina Beach is whether to invite bikers and start Bike Week festivities here.

Some in favor of the cycle celebration say it will bring a much needed economic boost. The town council put it on its agenda tonight and invited residents to come out and be heard. Several dozen people did just that.

After weighing both sides the council voted: a resounding no.

"We voted unanimously not to put out an invitation, but private business can do what they want to do," Councilman Dan Wilcox said after the 5-0 vote against the endorsement. "We have bikers here this week. We decided it's not something the town wanted to endorse."

The town council listened to the input, but decided instead of any boost to tourism, they would be risking goodwill gained in the money spent to bring families back to the beach. So for now no bike week at Carolina Beach.

I live in NY but own a house in Carolina Beach. I have seen well behaved and poorly behaved people in the 15 years I have been assocaited with the area. The poorly behaved are dealt with by the police, that is what they are paid for. Bikers are just people that like motorcycles, there may be a few bad apples but that is why cops are there. To cast out an entire group of money spending tourists because you buy into the hysteria about "outlaw" bikers is foolish. By the way I am not a biker.

this decision shows how out of touch CB town counsel is. living in CB, my impression is that a large portion of people who visit here have no interest in the sudued "family" activities. look at how packed the drinking establishments are. not even 1 vote for bike week shows a lack of respect towards the residence. if you come to pleasure island on 4 wheels and act the fool thats fine, just not on 2 cause were bad! Idiots.

How many people that live in Carolina Beach realize that many of the Bikers at Bike Week come to Carolina Beach to eat during Bike Week. Haven't been any problems, only more money being spent.

i live in CB and personally would love bike week activities.
The whole thought that "families" would feel unwelcome is ubsurd. were talking about a week not all summer long. alot of the visiters to CB are not interested in the dull "family" activities anyway, they are here to get drunk and eat out. i guess if you do the same but get here on 2 wheels and not 4 you dont fit the counsels mold.
idiots.

Bikers are like everybody else, most good a few trouble makers. I do not own a bike anymore but when I did I rode to 4 bike weeks in Myrtle Beach. I had a great time and even took my wife. Sure there are going to be some trouble makers but I would say 98% of people and bikes just want to get together. No different than memorial day weekend on the south end. I think Carolina Beach is missing the picture on this decision. I live near the Carolina Beach bridge and would have no problem with the extra people. It's a good way to make some extra money for stores and hotels. Use the money to upgrade some of the shops
