OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Oak Island town leaders say they are not happy with their Census number, and they’re considering a recount.

Oak Island assistant town manager Chad Hicks says the town is considering appealing last year’s population count.

The town says the numbers are inaccurate, and leaders want to make sure the town gets the resources it needs. Hicks explains there are many reasons why they believe they need to recount.

“One is sales tax distribution and distribution of other revenue,” Hicks said. “The other that is very important is if the numbers are off, when they go about redistricting the North Carolina and federal House seats, it affects how folks are represented. If they’re not counted, they’re not represented.”

Hicks says Oak Island is not the only one considering a recount. He says Bald Head Island and a few others are also considering an appeal.
