Mother speaks out about arrest of son's accused killer

READ MORE: Mother speaks out about arrest of son's accused killer

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Michael Smith's body was found last week in a Monkey Junction parking lot. Now investigators say he was the victim of murder. They charged Charles Saliba Monday with Smith's murder.

Sixteen hours after Smith's body was found, Saliba was arrested for weapon possession and was charged with first degree murder Monday afternoon.

"It's inspiring to know that this can come about," Smith's mother Carol Gregory said. "That people like this can be gotten quickly."

New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon says the swift arrest was due to the combined effort of detectives and the District Attorney's office.

"Detectives worked overnight and through the weekend, but everyone working together enabled to bring the beginning of justice and charge this gentleman with first degree murder," says McMahon.

Even though Saliba is charged with her son's murder, Gregory says she won't feel complete closure until he is convicted.

"I'm praying," Gregory said. "Still, even though they've caught him that they won't let him get by with this horrible crime that they committed on my son."

District Attorney Ben David says right now they are not sure of a motive in Smith's murder.

Saliba is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.

I want to comment more on the comments posted than the actual travesty that has happened.
The travesty is that a person, a human being has been murdered.
I would first and foremost like to send my deepest condolences to the family of Michael Smith. Stay strong and supportive of each other. Cherish the times and memories that you had and have of your family member.
Second, I would like to send my condolences to the Saliba family. You as well have now lost a family member.
Now in regards to some of the posts I have recently read.
For one, how dare you people judge anybody.
How can you be so heartless to make comments of this nature. Mothers, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters, Grandparents, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews are all mourning the loss of their loved ones right now.
To say that someone is getting what they deserve is preposterous. I hope you have lived a pure and perfect life to warrant these such thoughts. At the same time, you should check your medicine cabinet, your cigarette packs, your alcohol stock and taI want to comment more on the comments posted than the actual travesty that has happened.

Every one of those is a drug.
As well look deep inside yourself and try to put yourself in the shoes of a grieving mother, and think of how that must feel, and when you do, I hope you feel like hell for what you have said.
Maybe one day you will lose a loved one, and I would hope to whoever you believe in, that your grief is not amplified by the comments of heartless others.

Drug dealers

I knew Charlie, he was actually a extremely nice kid (yes I did just say that). Didn't really know Mike but his criminal record is irrelevant in this matter, people I know who knew him well had the same to say about him. My condolences go out to both families. I wasn't there that night therefore I don't know what actually happened, so I can't speak intelligently on the specifics of the case, not to mention the fact that the whole thing makes me genuinely sad. I wanted to emphasize a point that was briefly mentioned in the comment above. The reason so many good people do terrible things is often due to an opiate addiction which doesn't often even involve heroin nowadays, more commonly these addictions stem from percesets, Roxycontin, Oxycontin and similar pharmaceutical drugs that are over prescribed by doctors who actually get bonuses for the amount of drugs the prescribe. These companies are well aware of the profits they make off the illicit sales of these pills. The FDA sets a limit of opiates that can actually be prescribed per year and the pharmaceutical companies make sure that they sell the maximum allowed. I don't mean to say that people shouldn't be held accountable for their actions, I just wanted to point out who the real drug dealers are. If you want to see less tragedies like this in the future you should know the facts. When an election rolls around don't vote for politicians who are accepting large campaign donations from pharmaceutical companies. I'm not saying it will solve much but its a good place to start!

It's a very sad thing that this happened and my heart goes out to both families....Its a shame that 2 families have been ruined due to drug dealings. Had they both choosen to lead respectable lives and not meet in the dark to sell and buy drugs they would both be around.

Michael L. Smith was a Felon, had drug problem

Here's a motive for you Mr. DA...

on 09/09/2010 -- Michael L. Smith received a conviction for FELONY drug dealing in New Hanover County -- that's your office that prosecuted him!

look him up yourself...

I'm sorry he's gone, but let's cut the crap about him "no idea of a motive." This appears to be a drug deal gone wrong. Let's be honest and not whitewash things.

Gee

You are a GENIUS. Now that they have you to give them motives who needs detectives? Both the victim and suspect have drug records, I feel sure that fact didn't get past the detectives.

I agree with you!!! It's a

I agree with you!!! It's a shame that a life has been lost but the victim made a decision to leave his home to go on a drug deal...In my opion, drug dealers and users get what they deserve and their survivors should realize that.
