WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A symbolic gesture at Airlie Gardens today honored the victims of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in Japan.
The event was part of the “Plant an Azalea Week” sponsored by the Cape Fear Garden Club Civic Improvements Committee.
An azalea plant and a permanent marker stone were placed in Airlie’s Showcase Garden in memory of the victims of this month’s disaster in Japan.
“We decided this year instead of just planting an azalea, which we would typically do in New Hanover County or Wilmington, we would honor, provide the azalea as a memory to the victims of the recent disaster in Japan,” Garden Club chair Cathy Poulos said.
Airlie is one of the stops on the Garden Club’s Azalea Garden Tour April 8-10 during the 64th Annual North Carolina Azalea Festival.
