WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One Wilmington woman refuses to give up on her dream of seeing her community clean… even after no one took her invitation to be part of picking up litter on Saturday.

At first, Lola James just wanted help clean up her neighborhood. She set a clean-up day, but no one showed up to help. Now, she’s set her sights on a bigger project.

“This is about life. If you don’t try to preserve life, then your life can end very quickly.” James wants to keep trash out of a creek near her home.

Kemp Burdette, the Cape Fear Riverkeeper, agrees there is definitely a lot of work to be done on the creek in the park. “The litter is the thing that, you know, Marine Mammals and turtles and fish and all these things can’t have in the water. They eat plastics and they die, or they get tangled up in plastic things and fishing lines and die. So, we’re getting that big stuff out, but we’re also bringing attention to the fact that we need to do all kinds of things to minimize the effects of storm water.”

He said storm water picks up trash wherever it is and eventually dumps it into the river and our drinking water. Burdette says he saw James’s plea for help here on WWAY and decided to do just that. “She’s the person who really had this idea to get this area cleaned up, but what we can bring is a big email list and people who are used to helping us out and people who expect to come and get dirty cleaning up our rivers and streams every second Saturday of the month.”

James said the whole point is getting the community to realize how important picking up your trash is for our land and water.

The River Watch workday is scheduled for Saturday, May 14th.
