Commissioners continue to avoid media

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- This has been a stressful and emotional week for New Hanover County Commissioners. An agenda briefing earlier this afternoon was the first time all five have been in a room together since County Commissioner Brian Berger's scathing email, bashing other commissioners.

During the twenty minute briefing, commissioners seemed to get along. Playful banter was exchanged, but Commissioner Brian Berger was missing. He showed up forty minutes late.

One thing was clear, commissioners were very reluctant to speak with us. All the commissioners dodged questions and got out of the room as quickly as possible.

It's no wonder they avoided speaking with the media. Berger has made headlines after a scathing email sent to county staff, claiming other commissioners were having secret meetings and intentionally keeping him out of the loop.

He later accused County Commissioner Rick Catlin of stealing his notes at a recent commissioner meeting. The harsh accusations have caused a lot of tension between commissioners. Catlin, in reaction to Berger's comments, has said he was worried about Berger's mental health.

Berger wasn't the only commissioner dodging questions. Commission Chair Jonathan Barfield stormed out of the closed session meeting about 45 minutes before it ended and also avoided talking to reporters.

We reached out to Barfield this morning to talk about all these issues, but he told us he had stuff to do all day and was ironing a shirt.

Then, an interesting tidbit happened this afternoon at the agenda briefing. He came out of the closed session on his cell phone. He stopped talking for a minute to show all of the reporters how nicely pressed his shirt was.

Didn't the taxpayers spend something on the order of $36,000 to host a retreat earlier this year with the goal of getting our commissioners to work together for long range planning? Could we taxpayers get a refund?

They were allowed to play with toys. Unfortunately thompson & barfield were eating the glue and crayons.

But, did they share???

I don't know the answer to your question but I would be willing to bet each grabbed as many crayon's and glue bottles as they could and scampered back into a corner.

They aren't avoiding the media. They are avoiding WWAY. I would too if I was going to be raked over the coals for personal grooming decisions, or whatever petty thing suddenly becomes "news" on WWAY. The Star News has no problem getting interviews with any of them. WECT has no problem. Even the Big Talker has Berger, Catlin, and Thompson on regularly. Just continue "reporting" from your standpoint of personal vengeance; and keep getting the cold shoulder - and then of course, keep "reporting" every time you get blown off. The only thing missing is you calling the commissioners "doody heads" for not talking to you.

FIRST OFF LET'S SEE WHAT IS GETTING DONE FOR THE TAXPAYERS & THE COUNTY? NOTHING!!!! JOHNATHAN BARFIELD IS SO BUSY BULLYING PEOPLE, JASON THOMPSON IS A SMART ASS, & BRIAN BERGER IS LOONEY! THEREFORE THEY ARE JUST FIGHTING AMONGST THEMSELVES SO NOTHING IS GETTING DONE. THIS IS SUCH A WASTE OF THE TAXPAYERS MONEY. WE ARE PAYING THEM TO ACT LIKE CHILDREN! I SAY VOTE ALL THESE IDIOTS OUT OF OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

I don't remember Charlie Sheen on the ballot. But we have obviously voted for him as a county commissioner. I think they all are looney. We need to pray for them all and then get them the heck out of office.

Be careful of what you wish for. The last thing we taxpayers need is "effective" government. Brian represents one thing and one thing only, he is the agent to bring the message to our esteemed county commission that government is too big. So far, he is staying on that message despite the personal attacks against him.

Our county manager should have been fired several years ago for bollocksing up the tax assessments... He's still on the payroll.

We've dumped one old school jerk who thought that his hand in the cookie jar is an entitlement...

There still remains much to be accomplished BUT what is going on is a good start!

I think this is a good meeting to have attorneys present. Someone who knows the limits of power for the power hungry. This could actually get some national news coverage!! I mean, when two thugs fight it out on the street it's national headlines. Wow !! This is elected officials getting ready to slug it out in a meeting. Anyone got their phone handy??? CNN, FOX, ABC,NBC, Headline News... WECT WWAY Let's give Wilmington and this area some more publicity. Everyone thinks this type of behavior is news worthy.. let's see how worthy it really is!!

I am happy that Comm. Barfield got his shirt ironed. In his case, I believe that is what would be called a "stuffed shirt."
