Downtown Convention Center hosts first ever wedding reception

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Break out the bubbly and get ready to break it down on the dance floor... wedding season has begun!

The Downtown Convention Center's first ever wedding reception took place Saturday. Brooke and Brian Terry's guests enjoyed a cocktail hour then moved into the grand ballroom for the real party.

Mr. And Mrs. Terry's ceremony took place at Grace United Methodist Church, but they wanted a more modern feel for their seashell-themed reception. The couple said the Convention Center could not have been a more perfect addition to their perfect day.

"We are the first ones, the first of all. It feels great. I think they've definitely gone above and beyond and put on a wonderful event for us, and we're really thrilled,” said Terry.

Bride Brooke agreed that the Convention Center will do whatever they can to make your day special. The couple danced the night away and enjoyed food from the Convention Center’s own catering company.

The Terrys leave for their honeymoon to Antigua Monday morning.

Parking

Do the guests have to pay for parking at the Convention Center when they attend weddings?

Parking is $2 for the first

Parking is $2 for the first hour and $1 for each additional hour up to a maximum of $8 per day. Events do have the option of paying for guests parking.

WOW, and Tatoo Too

Making the big bucks yet. Only 14 scheduled events this year. They should have put the Tatoo event in w/this one. What a mix that would be. Does the White Elephant have that sinking feeling yet. If this is the best they can do, look out taxpayer, lock up your wallet.

How much did this cost the tax payers.At $1 million plus a year would equal to $3000.00 dollars a day.

Haven't you heard

The convention center was built with tourism tax dollars. Unless you live in a hotel, Mr. Taxpayer, it didn't cost you a dime.

Taxpayer Cost

Actually, it does cost the taxpayers. That property, waterfront property, doesn't pay any taxes because it is government owned. And the hotel prices are now higher than they should be to pay for the "tourism tax" you mentioned. And the "tourism tax" could have been used to promote the area which would have brought more business to the people here who do pay taxes so they lose revenue because of a convention center that will always lose money.
And the proposed hotel, the fourth attempt, will also compete with hotels that receive no subsidies. Not a good deal for taxpayers, but then again, it wasn't the taxpayers that convention center advocates really care about.
As for the wedding, taxpayers helped fund it, otherwise, the building wouldn't be affordable to rent.
