WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hear the beat and move your feet to the sounds of shagging.
Voted best Azalea Festival event in our “And the Winner Is…” contest, the Azalea Festival Shag Contest did not disappoint dancers or spectators Saturday.
Shag Contest Committee Chair Eddie Baker said people are drawn to shagging because of the rhythm and the variety of music you can shag to. He urges everyone to try shagging, especially North Carolinians.
“Oh, certainly. Since it originated in Carolina Beach, NC, certainly,” Baker said. “It’s something for all ages. We have people of different lifestyles, but once they hear the music, the rhythm’s the same to everyone no matter where they come from.”
The contest included young kids, social dancers and seasoned professionals.
If you’d like to learn how to shag, the Cape Fear Shag Club meets Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Shanty’s in Carolina Beach.
