NEW YORK (AP) – With the price of gas above $3.50 a gallon in nearly the entire country, and $3.70 a gallon in the Wilmington area, there are signs that Americans are cutting back on driving.

It marks a turnaround from a steady increase in demand for fuel as the economy improved.

According to MasterCard SpendingPulse, which tracks spending at 140,000 service stations, gas sales have fallen for five weeks in a row.

Before that, demand had increased for two months. And some analysts had expected the trend to continue, what with the 216,000 jobs that were added in March.

Instead, according to a March survey by the Oil Price Information Service, about 70 percent of the nation’s major gas-station chains say sales have fallen.

This year, gas prices have shot up as unrest in North Africa and the Middle East rattled energy markets.

A gallon of unleaded regular costs $3.77 on average, and only Wyoming has an average lower than $3.50. Most analysts are sticking to forecasts of a high of $4 a gallon, though some have predicted $5 gas.

    Who do you think owns the Wall Street Journal? Try reading this, it even talks about your Journal reference. Try not believing everything you hear on fox.

  • Guest333 says:

    Too bad more people don’t think like you, and realize that we can reduce our dependance on foreign oil, if we don’t try to sabbotage every measure toward that end. I’m with you!

    ANWR is such a small area and yet the LEFT just can’t seem to separate it from the Polar Bears. ***They may want to ask any Geologist why it would be a good idea, especially while they are in college. They JUST may learn something…as most geologists are for drilling in ANWR and will assure the young green kids that it won’t impact the polar bears or polar ice caps if we drill.

    How about the President providing American money to Brazil to Drill!!! NOT to benefit America…but to solely benefit BRAZIL!

    Huh? Duh, how do the Dems feel about that as they feed their families from the dollar menu….eat Mc Donalds and scrimp and save to barely make ends meet, so they can fill up the tank to get to the job everyday. MAYBE they will wake up…and realize that the strategies being employed from this administration are knocking us down and dragging us out…trying desperately to make America not exceptional.

    But, we are not going to let this Administration destroy this Country that our troops fought and died to make and KEEP great! We will NOT be another Greece. We are ready this time, much like Nov. 2010!!!

    Seems like gas was pretty reasonable when Bill Clinton left the White House. Everyone that wanted a job had one as well. The Nation was in good financial shape…….enter George Bush, the Republican and our Nation was nearly destroyed in 8 years. How can Obama be blamed for that? It will take many years to straighten out Bush’s mess.

  • Guest: guest2 says:

    Isn’t it strange that GEORGE SOROS is investing in drilling in Brazil? Consider the fact that he was a huge backer of the Obama ’08 Presidential campaign, I’m not surprised at all. I don’t EVER want to hear this President talk down another Republican for being in bed with big business again. Between George Soros and GE, he has NO room to point a finger at anyone…what a hypocrite!!

  • Guest88 says:

    You need to stop getting all your “news” from fox and rush. Obama didn’t give any money to Brazil. A group of people appointed by Bush is going to give that money to Brazil. That money. if they take it, goes to purchase equipment to drill from US companies. So all that money is going to solely benefit American companies.

  • Guest: guest2 says:

    Bill Clinton didn’t balance the budget all by himself. If I remember correctly, it was Newt Ginghrage and a Republican Congress who led the way in drawing up a balanced budget for President Clinton. Yes, the Republicans later went on a spending binge, but that binge pales in comparsion to what this administration, under the control of an all Democrat Congress (led by Pelosi) and an all Democrat Senate (led by Reid) has done to this country. This President has spent more than all the other Presidents COMBINED! At some point you have to stop blaming President Bush. Just as Republicans had to MAN UP, so must Democrats. Your party has ran up a 14 Trillion dollar deficit which is bancrupting this nation. We are BROKE. At the rate we’re going, we’ll all be eating beans and rice before it’s over.

    …you need to stop getting your info from NBC and MSNBC. They aren’t exactly unbiased in their views. Look at how many of their people have taken jobs in the Obama Administration. Couldn’t possibly be any conflict of interest here. Their parent company is GE. Look who just made a 14 billion dollar profit this past year and didn’t have to pay a dime in taxes! This comes just after they took their share of stimulus money. Jeff Emmitt, I’m sure, has no hands in this at all. Nothing smelly here…..

    One last thing, in case you haven’t noticed, the President now is Obama. It doesn’t matter who appointed someone to a position, the fact is, they are taking their orders from President Obama now. President Bush is no longer in charge. President Obama has agreed to give money to drill in Brazil. The American Company you hold so high as profiting from this money is owned by George Soros….THE BIGGEST MONEY GIVER TO THE DEMOCRAT PARTY! NEED I SAY MORE! Again, nothing smelly here…..

    “OBAMA UNDERWRITES OFFSHORE DRILLING” August 18,2009 issue of the Wall Street Journal.

    With Obama’s backing, the U.S. Export-Import bank offered two billion dollars in loans and guarantees to Brazil’s state-owned oil comapny Petrobras to finance exploration in the Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro.
    ~~~~~~ WHAT SAY YOU?????????
    Note, once again that Obama is not funding Brazilian exploration so that the oil ends up in the United States of America; he is funding Brazilian exploration for the oil to stay in Brazil. VERY SUSPICIOUS!
    Now, Is this our former Presidents fault too? I thought so!!! I am so happy that I am one of these “intelligent” people who see all sides of an issue. If you always fall back on the only thing you know how to say, “You watch Fox and I blame Bush”, I have to say, “Watch the news, yourself, most of it swings to the left, and if you watched CNN you would know what I say is a FACT!”
    Where on earth do you think Obama was the day after we went into Libya???? HE WAS IN BRAZIL commending them for DRILLING!!!!
    DIDN’T YOU SEE it televised on C.N.N. or MSNBC??? HUH??? It was there, RIGHT on the left-wing media stations too. See! I watch the world from all sides and use my BRAIN. I AM NOT BRAIN-WASHED!!! or Brain dead/
    And, since I am so smart,I began investing in oil stock in 2001 and increasing shares with every flush paycheck! I am not having any issues with paying for my gas. Can you say the same thing? Maybe you should have watched FOX or CNBC to gain some insight too. You should question why the Obama Administration is working overtime to block offshore drilling in the United States.
    I know why. Do you?
    The effect of Obama’s offshore drilling ban puts thousands of Americans out of work and also forces drilling companies to move their assets to other parts of the world.
    See, in order to create jobs, you have to be a friend to those who create jobs. Capitalism, not Socialism!
    November 2012, Change WE can believe in!
    We are reaping the harvest from George Bush’s actions. Our children, grandchildren, and great-children will be paying the price to fix this mess. Granted the current adminstrations has made some mistakes also but 90% of what we are facing now was in the works during the Bush adminstration.
  • Guest56 says:
    Still wrong.Soros doesn’t own the American company, he owned stock, of the Brazilian company. They say he sold it but I wouldn’t know if that’s true.At least get your facts straight.
  • Guest333 says:
    14 Trillion dollar deficit.
    I have to wonder what part of the statement above is so confusing to the Democrats?
    Democrats, let me clear this up for you folks because I am a nice person who cares about you all, unlike the President:
    OBAMA’S Spending Spree is the reason that you are no longer working or that you have suffered cut-back in hours, have been issued a pay-reduction, have no benefits, and will soon sit in a doctors office for 8 hours AFTER you wait 6 months for the doctors appointment for the broken leg you suffered in the car accident. God help ya if you have something seriously wrong with you, like cancer.
    You better wake up and see how this administration is hurting you… Ask any Canadian what they think of their Health Care?
  • Steve says:
    why do we as a nation export oil if we’re being charged over $100 a barrel we could just keep it here and pay for foriegn ooil?
  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:
    Our daily export of crude oil averages around 25,000 barrels a day to Canada. That is a very small, regional agreement that feeds one refinery. We import far more than that from Canada on a daily basis – about two million barrels.
    Almost all of our “exported oil” is refined product, the largest item being fuel oil that is too high in sulfur to be burned in the United States.
    We also support a couple of hundred thousand barrels of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel every day. That’s because there are many locations in the Third World that do not have refineries and have to import these products.
    Even if we kept every petroleum product here in the United States, it would have no effect on gasoline pricing.
    We live downtown and now leave the car parked two to three days aweek instead of willy nilly trips all over town. We are walking more and spending more money at shops and restaurants downtown with the exception of weekly planned trips to Costco, Harris Teeter or Piggly Wiggly depending who has a better add. Gas is either purchased at Dodges or Costco. A trip to the beach is a luxury and the annual trip to NY/NJ might get cut back to Myrtle or Charleston.
  • Guest350 says:
    I never fill up unless going on a trip, which are few and far between. I put in about $25 worth of gas a week and stretch it out. We used to eat out at least 7 times a week, that has been cut to about 2, which in itself has saved us a small fortune.
  • phillyguy says:
    Hit up Mcdonalds, Checkers, Taco bell..ect for only their dollar items then buy the club packs or french fries, mashed potatoes, cases of soda from Costco or Teeter, bring them home, and make a meal for a couple of dollars per person. Easy way to save money now adays!
  • Guest1118 says:
    How’s that hope and change working out for y’all? Anyone who voted for the marxist in the White House and buys in to the global warming myth; I don’t feel the least bit sorry for you.
    Years ago Bill Clinton vetoed opening up ANWAR for drilling and the libs said their typical “it will be at least 10 years, yada, yada, yada”. Well folks, it’s been over 10 years and if the environmental wackos hadn’t won then we wouldn’t have to depend on foreign oil.
    The libs are strangely silent now that they can’t blame Bush and Cheney for the gas prices. Hmmmm…..
  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:
    …ANWR, by itself, would not eliminate all imports. It would certainly reduce the amount we import, but strictly because of logistical limitations, we would still be importing oil.
    It’s absolutely idiotic to allow billions of barrel to sit untapped (and even unmeasured) in Alaska, but it makes perfect sense if you are a liberal Democrat intent on bringing America to her knees.
  • Phillyguy says:
    I did not intend my comments to turn into a political discussion while trying to stick with the origional question from WWAY but here is my two cents.. We can’t blame Bush, Obama, The Tea Party ect. We did not learn from the first energy crisis in the 1970’s. Between that, the steel mills and factories started to close, railroads started shutting down is when this mess (energy and our production of goods) started going dowm the tubes. You can thank both sides of the isle in Washington over the years and our major corporations for selling us out
  • Guest1118 says:
    might save some grocery money but your health care bills for obesity and high cholesterol will be thru the roof! LOL. No fast food! Cook from scratch, buy in bulk. Healthy and cheaper.
