COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Columbus County teen surrounded by controversy is back in court.

It was almost two years ago when Allen “Frog” Strickland’s house went up in flames. Today he went on trial for arson and attempting to obtain property through false pretenses, an WWAY NewsChannel 3 was the TV station in the courtroom.

The prosecution says Strickland burned his home on purpose to collect money from his insurance company.

Jury selection began today. By the end of the day 12 jurors had been seated.

The judge also heard motions from both sides to see what evidence may be allowed in court. Some evidence, if allowed, would show that former state Sen. R.C. Soles paid for Strickland’s home. The prosecution believes that the case cannot even be described to the jury with out pointing this out. Strickland’s attorney, on the other hand, thinks it has nothing to do with the case.

“There’s a lot of history between Sen. Soles and Mr. Strickland,” Judge Gary Trawick said. “That’s not what this case is about, and we’re not going to go into… Things that are not are not going to come out in the evidence in this case.”

The judge did not rule either way on these motions. He said he would have to see any evidence or statements completely before making a decision. The discussion happened away from any of the possible jurors.

Attorneys will work to find two alternate jurors tomorrow.

As president of the Columbus County Chapter of the Frog Strickland Fan Club, I request that WWAY send its best photographer to snap Frog as he enters and exits the court house every day of his trial.

And please, WWAY, publish the pictures on your WEB site. Closeups, please!

He’s a real cutie, and all of us fans are going to tune in everyday to get a glimpse of our sweetie.

Is the DA’s campaign signs and slogan of ‘crime fighter’ considered an Attempt to Obtain Property by False Pretense if he got elected, collects a paycheck from the State of North Carolina and then spends so much resources with spinning tabloid fodder and diverting traffic ticket funds? Instead of using those resources for their intended purpose of investigating violent home invastions and violent homicides?

  • excuse me

Please excuse me but I am the fan club president. Don’t worry about photos of Allen you should be there in person. He is innocent and a victim of the good ole boys in Tabor City. Why is Mr. GREG SIBBETT still wearing his badge? Sounds like a good story and why does he drives Dowless’s car on the weekend pretending to be Barney?

Do you want a rundown of how every single victim died? Are you a frustrated M.E.? Do you have a map with pushpins?

The SUREST way for WWAY to lose viewers would be to copy anything from WECT or even compare notes with the Wilmington Red Star.

On a personal note, I’m glad they keep running stories about Frog, Creepy Old Guy, and Jenelle. It gives me a wealth of material to write about.

You just can’t write anything humorous about dead people. (Unless they’re liberals.)

    What will happen to Frog?

    A. The right palms have been greased, the fix is in and he will be acquitted of all charges.

    B. He will be convicted but Creepy Old Guy will get him probation.

    C. Don’t know, don’t care, but give him a fifth of Wild Turkey, a Bic lighter, a can of gasoline, and tell him to go home and try harder.

  • guesty

go home, go inside and lock all doors and then try harder.

The sad thing is all 3 choices are real possibilities in this case.
