WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Buying used can save you some serious cash. That’s what one Leland woman was trying to do when she bought a used refrigerator from a Wilmington business.

Before the warranty expired, her refrigerator died. Now she’s left with an old loaner.

“I’m stuck,” Susan Seltzer said. “It’s like, what do I do?”

Seltzer is at her wits end. Last summer she went online to search for a Wilmington business that sold used refrigerators. She found Best Deal Appliances on Market Street.

“The woman I spoke with was very nice,” Seltzer said. “We chit-chatted, walked around. I kept saying, ‘I’m a single mom. I really need to stretch my money.’ She said, ‘No problem. You can get warranties, extended warranties.’ I said, ‘great.'”

Seltzer says she spent nearly $450 on a 25-cubic foot Kitchen Aid with a bottom freezer. It came with a six-month warranty.

“It worked fine for the first, I’d say, less than 60 days, then I lost all my food the first time,” Seltzer said. “Took them three days to get out there. Then in mid-October it went back out again. It was out for a week. I had techs at my house every single day. Quite a pain keeping my food in coolers.”

Finally, in November, the fridge died while still under warranty. Seltzer says the company brought her a loaner, but it was so small and the shelves so rickety, that out of frustration she finally bought another refrigerator off of Craigslist. This was months ago, And she still hasn’t been able to find out if Best Deal appliances is going to repair hers or replace it.

“I continued to call through February, could’ve been early March, talking to the owner, and I said ‘Look, we’ve got to do something. It’s gone out three times. I’ve lost food. I did the deal with integrity, and I expect the same out of you,'” she said.

We called Best Deal Appliances and spoke with owner Richard Nielsen. He says his company does not give cash refunds, but he is going to resolve the issue.

“No, I won’t give her her money back. That’s the receipt that we signed,” Nielsen said. “And I was willing to work with her. I was willing to give her another refrigerator. I can have mine back, and I give her a bottom fridge, but she’s gotta come and look. We’re getting a trailer load thursday, and I will make sure there’s something in there, like a bottom freezer.”

Seltzer says she will be there to get another one. We’ll let you know what happens when the new shipment comes in.
