RALEIGH, NC (AP) — House Republicans in North Carolina say
they’re almost ready to clear a key hurdle in the formation of a
budget for the next two years that cuts more than $1 billion more
than Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue proposed.

Subcommittees that oversee several budget categories on Thursday
hope to complete their proposals a week after rolling out their
preliminary ideas to meet spending reduction targets. Republicans
had to cut deeper than Perdue because they plan to let a pair of
temporary taxes expire this year.

The public education budget for next year would be about 11
percent less than what is needed to keep services at current
levels. Other budget categories would see much deeper cuts.

House Speaker Thom Tillis says he wants to vote on a budget bill
May 2.
