WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) — Before Wednesday’s tennis match New Hanover tennis coach David Henry set the stage for the biggest high school tennis match in Wilmington this so far this year. “They are 8-1. We’re 9-0, so if we win we’re the out-right champs,” Henry said. “If we lose we’ll have to play again either Friday or Saturday to determine who gets the # 1 seed and the overall conference championship.”

As it turns out there will not be a playoff to determine the #1 seed in the Mideastern Conference this season. New Hanover defeated Hoggard 8-1 on Wednesday. The Wildcats finish the regular season with a perfect 10-0 league record. They’re 14-4 overall and ranked #3 in the state behind # 1 RJ Reynolds and # 2 Raleigh Broughton. Sophomore transfer student Woravin Kumthonkittikul plays # 1 singles for New Hanover. Woravin beat Hoggard’s Chad Phelps 6-3,6-3 in the feature singles match. The state playoffs begin next week for both squads.
