WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – The Mayo family is in the fight of their lives. After a serious accident sent 10-year-old Zack Mayo to the hospital last year, doctors discovered he had tumors on his liver and lungs. That’s when their lives changed forever.
“When this accident happened, they are such a close knit family that they just completely walked away from their business,” said Mayo family friend Ann Willard. “Hired people to come in, and they have not left Zack’s side the entire time.”
Willard says since the family found out about Zack’s cancer, they have been working non-stop to fight it. She says she knows many unexpected costs have made life difficult for the family. That’s why the community decided to “Spring for Zack.”
“They’ve just had so many expenses that they’ve had to overcome,” Willard said. “And with our help, just a little small part, that this community can do to help Mayo family with their added expenses.”
Willard says hundreds of people came to the event Sunday. Those who came paid fifteen dollars at the door and were able to bid on items in a silent auction. Event organizer Deborah Conard says she is excited to give all the money generated from the event to the family.
“People are showing up at the door like crazy,” Conard said. “We’ve run out of armbands, which is a good thing. So yes, I’m really excited because it’s all about the community showing up to help raise some money for this family and I think that we are definitely going to meet the goal for that. People are showing up and spending money.”
Conard says if you were not able to make it to the event, you can still donate at www.springforzack.com. They hope to have a total of funds collected soon.
