WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Prosecutors have dropped a drug charge against a man accused of hitting and killing two cyclists.

Assistant District Attorney Doug Carriker says the state dismissed Thomas Grooms’s cocaine possession charge. Carriker says the investigation found the substance on Grooms was not cocaine, but mephedrone, which is not illegal.

Carriker says the prosecution is still trying to enhance Grooms’s sentencing on other charges, including two counts of second degree murder in the March deaths of David and Trey Doolittle.

Grooms is due back in court June 16.

Perhaps people shouldn’t be so quick to judge when they themselves do not know the entire story. Things are not always black or white, and for this man to be crucified the way that he has been is beyond reproach. For a community to deny him his rights because of what happened is a shame. I am speaking both of the private citizens and law enforcement. I thought that in this country we were innocent until proven guilty? Is that not the case. Countless news hours were spent proclaiming that Mr. Grooms had drugs in his possession at the time of his arrest, and the public jumped on that notion and ran with it. However, when the DA realizes that they were WRONG…the news gives a tiny blurp saying that the charges were dropped. Nevermind that the charges were wrong to begin with and this isn’t a case of them dropping the charges bc they don’t have enough evidence, but rather that the charges were dropped because they had NO evidence. I sincerely hope that none of you are ever in the position to have to rely on the justice system that has failed this man.

Maybe the prosecution should argue the drug was still being abused or used in a way other then intended……..like all other drugs

I agree with the above statement…just because it isn’t cocaine and its mephadrone (AKA Bath Salts) in my opinion it doesn’t change anything at all. The mephadrone is a synthetic form of cocaine which gives you an ecstasy or cocaine high. The “Bath Salts” are sold in stores but on the package it is labeled “Not for human consumption”, which in my opinion is the same as if someone was huffing spray paint in their car, passed out and killed someone…I see no difference in this situation and I’m sure the prosecuting da’s won’t either. Don’t get too excited Grooms, you’ll still go away for a very long time, but won’t be like any punishment you gave the Doolittle family
