WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Hurricane season is less than one month away, and although we hope for a calm season, it's better to be safe than sorry.
Many Cape Fear residents came out to Stormfest 2011 Saturday to learn from area experts about the complete process of preparing for a hurricane.
The free event allowed families to talk with meteorologists, learn from emergency officials and check out hurricane data and maps.
Mom Kelly Massey said the green screen is what got her kids interested.
"Living here at the beach, you need to know about storm preparedness and what to do," Massey said.
"We were interested in updating our hurricane kit and maybe just taking another look at what the needs are for pets and that kind of thing," Wilmington resident Roy Mayo said.
Mayo said the festival is good for community awareness but also great for getting children interested in math and science.
