NOTE: In addition to the homicide on Sunday morning, here are several other significant incidents from over the weekend. These cases are still under investigation.
Time: 5:37 a.m. – Saturday morning
Location: 3016 Princess Place Drive – parking lot
Offense: Armed robbery/assault
Summary: The male victim, age 26, reported that he came out the nearby store and got into his car. He said that two men in their twenties, wearing red bandanas over their faces, approached his car. One displayed a handgun and demanded whatever he (the victim) had. Then he hit the victim in the head with the butt of the gun. The men ordered the victim out of his car, hit him again, and took his wallet and cell phone. They left in separate vehicles, reportedly heading north on 30th Street. The victim described one vehicle as being similar to a dark-colored Chevy Astro van (blue or black), and he said the other vehicle was like a Jeep, either silver or white. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of a head laceration.
Time: 7:27 a.m. – Sunday morning
Location: 800 block N. 30th Street
Offense: Assault w/Deadly Weapon w/Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury
Summary: Officers responded to the area for a report of a man who had been shot. They found the victim sitting on a chair in front of a residence in the 900 block Emory Street. His shirt was bloody on the front and back. The victim provided very little information to officers, refusing to tell them what had happened. He was transported to NHRMC for treatment of a gunshot wound to the chest. He later was released. The case remains under investigation.
Time: 4:54 p.m. – Sunday afternoon
Location: 3501 Oleander Drive (Hanover Center parking lot)
Offense: Attempted common law robbery (purse snatching)
Summary: The 85-year-old female victim reported that she had just returned to her car after purchasing food from the cafeteria. She was putting the food in the trunk of her car when a man came up behind her and grabbed her purse, knocking the victim to the ground. She refused to let go of the purse and the man dragged he a few feet on the ground. Then he let go, without getting the purse, jumped into vehicle driven by a second man, and they drove away on Oleander toward downtown. The victim was transported to Cape Fear for treatment of lacerations and a possible hip injury. The victim’s assailant is described as a white male in his twenties, short black hair, wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans, with some type of tattoo on his inside forearm. Witnesses described the getaway vehicle as a small, silver-blue or green SUV.
