WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) -- Cody Stiles pitched seven strong innings and Greg Holt came off the bench to drive in five runs as ninth-ranked North Carolina defeated UNCW, 11-5, on Tuesday in non-conference baseball action at Brooks Field.
The Tar Heels, ranked as high as ninth in the polls, raised their record to 38-10 with their seventh straight win. The Seahawk saw their brief four-game winning streak halted with the loss and fell to 27-22.
Stiles (4-0) overcame a rough start to earn his fourth win of the season. He allowed a pair of runs in the third, but recovered to keep the Seahawks off the board the rest of his outing. He scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out six.
Holt entered the game as a pinch hitter in the fourth inning and belted a grand slam off reliever Kelly Secrest to give UNC a 5-2 lead. He would later add another RBI in the seventh inning on a double. Holt finished the game 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
In the Seahawk third, Cameron Cockman (2-for-5) and Matt Campbell gave UNCW a 1-0 lead with back-to-back doubles to open the inning against Stiles. Campbell would score one batter later on Hunter Ridge’s RBI single through the middle. Stiles would settle down and retire the next three hitters with runners on the corners to keep it a 2-0 deficit.
The Tar Heels would score the next 11 runs from the fourth through the seventh innings.
UNCW scored three in the eighth to complete the scoring. Alex Hill (2-for-4) tripled in two runs and he would score on a UNC error later in the inning.
UNCW starter Justin Bradley (3-4) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on one hit and five walks in three-plus innings of work.
Thomas Pope raised his league-leading batting average to .409 with two hits.
Chaz Frank and Jesse Wierzbicki each collected three hits to lead a 15-hit offense for the Tar Heels. Frank added a career-high three runs batted in.
The Seahawks visit Old Dominion for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.
