WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was hard to miss the Kyle Petty Charity Ride when it pulled into Wilmington. More than 175 bikes cruised for a cause in a ride that started May 7th in New York and wraps up May 13th in Florida.

Riders come from all walks of life come together for the event. There are other NASCAR drivers and athletes, like NFL star Herschel Walker. But the reason for the ride is giving. Money raised is donated to children’s charities, particularly “Victory Junction,” which Petty and his family started.

Petty said, “We started the ‘Victory Junction’ camp after our son was killed eleven years ago and it was just something we felt like we needed to do. We had been to camps, we did the charity ride and we raised money. It just all came together.”

The Kyle Petty Charity Ride covered more than 400 miles on Wednesday. This is the 17th anniversary ride. Since it started, riders covered nearly ten million miles and donated more than $14 million to “Victory Junction” and other charities that support chronically ill children.
