WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- They're adult escorts who claim to be UNCW students who like to party and get naked. Tonight we take a closer look at this escort service to see what it's really all about.
EscortCarolina.com claims all its girls are UNCW students just trying to make a buck while having some fun. But we found out that the girls are not UNCW students, and that the university had no idea its name was being used to promote such a business.
EscortCarolina.com advertises female escorts, including escorts right here in Wilmington. The site says, "We started this site because me and my girlfriends wanted to earn a little extra cash while going to school here at UNCW. The truth is the way we like to party and get naked we might as well be getting paid for it too!"
Of course several questions pop up when someone reads this, like what kind of services are they selling? And would UNCW student's really be involved with an escort service.
WWAY intern Maria Satira went undercover, playing the role of a UNCW transfer student interested in being an escort.
A man answered the phone number on the website, and Maria told him she was interested in working for the escort service. The man quickly asked if she was in the area, but our intern said she would be moving to town in the coming week.
"Ok. Next week. That's cool," he said. "We'll set up an appointment with my girlfriend, and she does all the pictures. We'll get you out there. We get a lot of calls. I don't have a lot of girls right now, and there's a lot of money to be made. There's no funny stuff ok?"
Maria asked what type of money can an escort expect and what kind of things are escorts expected to do. He said a girl can make up to $600 on a good day, adding that no sex is involved. Just companionship.
"You're not allowed to do any kind of sex stuff, 'cause that's like illegal, you know what I mean?," he said. "So you don't have to do that, which is good 'cause you don't want to do that anyways. Basically you get a bunch of money to hang out with these rich guys."
As for their online advertisement claiming their escorts are all UNCW students, he told Maria she would not have to prove she was a student.
"No, no. Not at all," he said. "It's pretty laid back. You make you're own schedule. You can do whatever you want."
In an effort to get a more up front answer we asked again if the escorts are really uncw students or students at all.
"I have 18, 19, 20 (-year-olds). I got a 40-year-old and a 32-year-old," the man said. But he said not all of them are students. "No. One of the girls, Ariana, she goes to college. I think Cape Fear (Community College)."
After catching the escort service making a false claim we contacted UNCW to see if it was aware that this website was using the university's name.
"We had no idea that a site was using the university's names," spokeswoman Cindy Lawson said.
Lawson says this is not the only time the university's name has been used without its consent, and says these situations and claims are quickly addressed.
"The university will try and find out who is the person, individuals or companies behind the site and ask them to cease and desist using our name," she said.
We called the escort service back and revealed that we were working on a story about the claim that their escorts are UNCW students. The same man who answered the phone the first time denied that his company posted the UNCW claim on the website.
"It's not actually my website," he said. "It's a private thing that we just post on there. It's not our stuff."
We asked the man what he had to say about the fact that his girls are being advertised online as UNCW students. He quickly got defensive.
"No, there's no sex no bad stuff," he said.
When we pointed out we didn't ask about sex and again wanted to know about the UNCW claim, he said, "Listen I don't have time for this (expletive deleted). I have (expletive deleted) to do."
We also talked with several UNCW students who were shocked by the website's use of the university's name. They say false claims like this only put the university in a bad light.

Well I don't know how to cut the news everyone but I'm the owner of the infamous EscortCarolina.com, I opened my first escort service back in 2001 when when I was only 20yrs old because I myself needed money to help pay for school after being denied for financial aid(btw I saw plenty of rich kids with nice cars get approved). they strive to be self supporting. They avoid entitlements and hand outs. With the job done by her Majesty and King Mike, our state budget is in such a hole that many students may have to resort to work in order to get their education.
Now which makes more sense. Work at McDonalds; go home greasy every day; and make $8 per hour. Not that there's anything wrong with working at McDonalds. OR work for this service and make more in one evening then they can make in a week at McD's.
