WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — When New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger won his seat in last year’s election, he quickly gained a reputation of wanting to fight the perceived “good ol’ boy network” and bring change to the county.

Now, just a few months into his term, he’s also got a reputation for not being able to show up on time. He’s consistently late to meetings. Thursday, he was 20 minutes late for an agenda meeting. Other commissioners even called him out saying they were tired of his tardiness. Then Friday, he was a no-show for an important breakfast meeting between commissioners and the New Hanover County School Board.

Mr. Berger, being on time is a basic element of doing any job well. You should be experienced enough to know that. Consistently being late is not only unprofessional, it’s disrespectful. If someone at this television station had the attendance record YOU have, they wouldn’t be here very long.

Mr. Berger, you wanted this job. You ran for it. And the voters gave you an opportunity and the privilege to do it. Now, you repay them with these shenanigans?

And let’s not forget, you were able to find the time to write that six-page e-mail manifesto a few weeks back, slamming County Manager Bruce Shell and his staff for not being as “timely” as you thought they should be on getting you information on air quality research.

It’s going to be a very long 3.5-year term if you keep this up, Mr. Berger. You’re quickly losing any credibility you may have had as an outsider wanting to initiate reform.

May we suggest showing some respect for your constituents? Buy an alarm clock, use it and try to be on time from now on. If not, please step aside and let someone more professional, more capable and more punctual do the job!

An alarm clock? How about he heads over to Oz to see if they have any brains left.

If I showed up late on my job without letting anyone know, I would be fired!! This is standard in any workplace..maybe Mr. Berger dosent see his position as a job but as a favor he is doing for the community which if he does, then he needs to go..Im glad I didnt vote for his nutty behind! Its clear his only agenda is to sensationalize his name in the media with these antics..

Whoever wrote this article is part of the problem, not the solution. The current lot of local politicians has a vacuum hose in your wallet that empties into their personal accounts. It is out of hand and needs to be investigated by the State Attorney General. Brian is the only one interested in cleaning it up and if he is a few minutes late to a meeting here and there that means very little in the big picture. The author of this article is petty.

I guess you would hire someone and pay them a salary if they showed up – make that WHEN they showed up – half an hour late for work every day? You must not live in New Hanover County because I do, and I pay his salary, small as it is. Not only would I expect my employee to show up for work, but show up informed and know what he is talking about! This guy doesn’t have a clue, much less an opinion. He’s a talking head.

I enthusiastically supported Brian, and have been slowly regretting it week after week with each bump in the road. I’m also starting to take offense as a solid conservative citizen of this county (again, I both voted and volunteered for him) at his increasing blaming the media and other commissioners for his own foibles.
It’s not too late, but if he doesn’t straighten up and get his act together quick, he will permanently be branded a nutjob by this whole county (both sides of the aisle).

I and my neighbors (who also voted for him in both primary and general election) also cringed when he started bandying about the corruption allegations then still has yet to back up his words. I’m no fan of his targets, but if it was me on the other end of libelous, baseless accusations like that in such public forums I would have punched him right in the mouth.

Still time Brian. Get these plans together you’re always talking about, quit being late, please quit throwing around the “he touched me” thing that comes up again and again, and next election it will all be forgotten.

Otherwise, he will simply be marginalized and ignored.

I’d love to see Berger make some changes, but being late is not excusable. Maybe once and a while, but not at his current rate. It’s extremely unprofessional, and if the other commissioner members can make it, why can’t he?

I really would like to see changes made. I have disagreed with many decisions in the past. Berger is coming across as a clown and if he wants to make changes he needs to be as professional, if not more than the other sitting members.

He’s late, missing, and can’t get a sentence out. How is he going to accomplish anything?

He may have all the best intentions in the world, but I don’t see it happening.

Right on! I agree with everything said in “The Rant.” He should consider a try at a comedy carreer.

In his defence, I would say that without him, council meetings would be duller than a meeting of the W.C.T.U.

W.C.T.U., for those of you who are not Southern ,is the Womens Christian Temperance Union. They are against anything that is fun, especially sex and booze.

It has been several years since I put much faith into our County Commissioners. Didn’t vote for Mr. Berger but at one time thought that perhaps he might bring something to the board. Well, it sure isn’t professionalism or intellience that he brought. But he has given us many comedic episodes, in a sad sort of way. And we have 3.5 more years of this?!?! SAY IT AIN’T SO!! It is truly sad when someone makes the other county commissioners look so good.

I agree. I was ready for someone to go against the grain. Sadly, I don’t think Berger is the man for that job.

Berger needs to get his act straight. He’s handing his opposition ammunition on a silver platter. I am behind him in his views, but if he can’t be taken seriously I don’t know what good he is.

Seriously – we all KNOW the general value of Thompson and Barfield. Davis is conservative when it suits him, and Catlin seems to have lost his passion for cutting spending now that he’s IN the good ol’ boys’ club.

Berger obviously has problems. I still think he was drunk or medicated in that rambling, incoherent interview, and the incident with his married girlfriend indicates he doesn’t bat one-thousand in the judgment department.

But he seems to be the only one who is the least bit interested in stopping the corruption and insane spending. Ever wonder how ANY and EVERY incident involving Berger appears immediately in all the local media? Ever wonder if he IS being set up, because he poses a threat to the “club?” I have to wonder too, how many of the anti-Berger posts are typed by people who stand to benefit financially from “business as usual.”

Let me ask you this – who do you trust to look out for YOUR financial interests – Crazy Berger….or the oh-so-predictable Barfield and Thompson?

He’s our ONLY hope and he needs to straighten up and fly right.

I say it is TOO LATE, he is Cracked!

Co-Co for Coco Puffs!

Not only has he alienated the members of the body in which he was elected to serve, he has alienated most of the tri-county area. People are writing in from Pender and Columbus Counties.

I stood up before the recent Commissioners Open Forum at Myrtle Grove School, and as I was speaking, Berger was nodding at me and laughing…almost hysterically.

I wasn’t saying anything that could have been interpreted as funny. It was so distracting that it made me forget what I wanted to say, and that isn’t easy. We left that meeting shaking our head, AGAIN!

And believe me, his accusations of touching, poking and other paranoid complaints of secret sessions without him won’t be forgotten during the next election. He needs to step down as soon as possible.

The abuccus is cast with the numbers that add up to a losing game for Berger. Granted, I dislike the self-serving sleazey Commissioners, but until we can convince “Commonsensenote” to run, we will have more of the same, with a gallon jug of lunacy.

I would like to know who is the puppetmaster with the strings. It is obvious Berger has somebody else pulling his strings. This guy in no way shape or form could develop a complete thought without the help of someone else.
